摘要:
There is disclosed a fiber optic waveguide which is particularly suited for infrared radiation transmission at extended wavelengths. The core of the waveguide is fabricated from heavy ionic compounds selected from metal halides in order to achieve such extended infrared transparency. While it is impossible to prepare these materials into optical fibers using conventional fiber drawing techniques, the present invention teaches how such materials may be prepared into optical fibers using an extrusion process at elevated temperatures and high pressures.

A drop cable includes a jacket, first and second support members, and at least one optical fiber. The jacket has a oval-shaped cavity defined therein, where the minor dimension of the cavity is as small as about 0.25 mm and wherein the major dimension of the cavity is in a range of 0.25 mm to 10 mm. The first and second support members are arranged on opposing sides of the cavity and run generally longitudinally. The optical fiber is within the cavity and has a length greater than a length of the drop cable. Further, the optical fiber is in a substantially serpentine configuration in the cavity, where the serpentine configuration is substantially along a plane defined by a major axis of the oval-shape of the cavity.

A method of forming a low-cost drop cable (10) is disclosed. The method includes providing a protective cover material (352) having an extrusion temperature of 140° C.≦TE≦160° C. The protective cover material is extruded through a die (420) having a single aperture (424) that defines the cable's elongate cross-sectional shape. The extrusion process involves covering first and second strength members (30) on either side of at least one optical fiber (50). The combination of the low temperature of the extrudable protective cover material and the elongate shape of the single die aperture cause the formation of an oval cavity (20) within the extruded protective cover material. The oval cavity has major and central axes (A1, AC) and surrounds the at least one optical fiber. The strength members lie along the cavity major axis. Tensioning the strength members during extrusion and then releasing the tension causes the drop cable length to be reduced. This gives rise to an excess fiber length, which adopts a serpentine configuration substantially in a plane (PF) defined by the major and central axes (A1, A2) of the oval cavity.

A hydraulic adjusting system is provided for the continuous adjustment of the vibration amplitude of a rotating eccentric element. The hydraulic adjusting device includes a piston in a single acting cylinder. A piston connecting rod extends through the cylinder and is rigidly journalled axially inside the piston. One end of the rod is rigidly connected to a drive shaft of the eccentric element and the other end to a power source for rotatably driving the eccentric element. The system provides for continuous adjustment of amplitude vibration and, since the vibration amplitude is directly proportional to the hydraulic pressure acting on the piston, the system also facilitates setting and monitoring of such vibration amplitude.

A connector for two optical fibers having at least one body composed of a one-piece member with an axial bore, a ferrule supporting an optical fiber in the bore, the axial bore being defined by two coaxial cylindrical surfaces of revolution having different diameters, two ferrules supporting in an internal bore the two fibers, the two ferrules each being defined by an external cylindrical surface of revolution complementary to that of the one-piece member having the smaller diameter, at least one first sleeve mounted around the first of the ferrules; first elastic linking means between the sleeve and the first ferrule, the sleeve being defined externally by a cylindrical surface of revolution complementary to that of the body member having the larger diameter, these two ferrules being introduced into the body member such that, firstly, they are positioned at least partially in the axial bore of the smaller diameter and, secondly, such that the sleeve is placed in the axial bore of larger diameter. Also disclosed is an optical fiber cable comprising at least one of the disclosed connector and a method for allowing the connection of at least one optical fiber surrounded by a relatively flexible sheath to a ferrule and apparatus for carrying out the method.
摘要:
A connecting device for a pair of light waveguide cables with each cable having an optical fiber which is loosely enclosed in a tubular sheath characterized by a joint between the ends of the pair of sheaths of the two cables being bridged by an appropriate tube which is fixed to the ends of the two sheaths and does not require any special housing such as bushing and the like. The tube may be an inner tube, which is inserted into the interiors of the pair of tubular sheaths being connected together or an outer tube which is fixed onto the tubular sheaths. In another embodiment, both an inner and outer tube are utilized. A length adjustment of the optical fiber within the pair of tubular sheaths can be carried out by virtue of a helical arrangement of the optical fiber and the bridging which is provided by the one or more tubes.

A cable includes a guide element and a signal line. The guide element extends flatly on a guide plane, and the signal line is guided along a winding path on the guide plane by the guide element. The signal line has multiple bends on the guide plane. In particular, the cable is suitable for use under high stretching loads by virtue of the winding course of the signal line. The cable is simultaneously particularly space-saving in that the line is guided solely within the guide plane. A method for producing the cable is also provided.

There is provided a fiber optic cable wherein optical fibers are protected from breakage or damage utilizing a core having a fiber optic rod or rods intertwined with at least one thread made of nonfiber optic material. The core has an outer jacket over it which may be extruded in a conventional manner.

A multiple optical fibre cable in which the fibres can be used separately for long distance signal transmission comprises a central core round which the optical conductors are concentically disposed. Each optical conductor is constituted by an optical fibre protected by a first layer or covering of polyamide and a second layer or sheath of polyethylene. In order to avoid distortion of the optical fibre, the second layer or sheath is stretched. Application: Optical telecommunications cables.
