摘要: This application is directed to driving methods for electrophoretic displays. The driving methods comprise grey level waveforms which greatly enhance the pictorial quality of images displayed. The driving method comprises: (a) applying waveform to drive each pixel from its initial color state to the full first color then to a color state of a desired level; or (b) applying waveform to drive each pixel from its initial color state to the full second color then to a color state of a desired level.

摘要: The invention is an electric paper sheet that uses a pattern of conductive charge-retaining islands on the outward-facing side of the first of two thin layers used to encapsulate a Gyricon sheet. The second encapsulating layer may also coated with a conductive material, or made of a conductive material, and may or may not be patterned. The Gyricon sheet and two encapsulating layers comprise a sheet of Gyricon electric paper on which images can be written and erased repeatedly. The patterned charge-retaining islands of the first encapsulating layer receive electric charges from an external charge-transfer device. After the charge-transfer device is removed, the conductive, charge-retaining islands hold electric charge, creating an electric field in the electric paper sufficient to cause an image change.

摘要: Optical plates which have columnar features approximately in the direction of light propagation which are capable of total internal reflection, a controllable numeric aperture (NA) at input and output surfaces, rotational azimuthal averaging and translation of the object plane from a back surface of the plate to a front surface of the plate and are optical equivalent of a FOFP. These plates are made from a composition of irradiation sensitive glass which has been etched in either the columnar features or the surrounding features. If the surrounding features have been etched, the etched areas are filled with either a low melt glass or plastic or a light blocking material such as a black composition material. If the columnar features have been etched the etched areas are filled with a low melt glass or plastic. The resultant plates contain adjacent areas with differing refractive indices which result in a substrate containing a plurality of cylindrical features whose boundaries are defined by a discontinuity of refractive indices wherein the index of refraction within the cylindrical features is greater than the index of refraction at the boundaries and external to the cylindrical features.

摘要: A sensor system for measuring physical properties of a sheet. In one embodiment, the sensor system measures paper curl and thickness using two sensors, each of which includes a member, a base, and measurement circuit. The two members are positioned in opposition to each other and both contact the sheet as it passes between them. Each member is coupled to a base, which includes a measurement circuit. Each measurement circuit measures the displacement of its associated member. In another embodiment, the sensor system measures stiffness and curl using two pairs of opposed sensors. In yet another embodiment, the sensor system measures thermal diffusivity of a sheet of paper using three sensors, one of which includes a heater for heating the sheet of paper and the other two sensors include thermocouples in contact with the sheet of paper for sensing the heat of the paper.

摘要: A full color display is disclosed having a high efficiency light source optically coupled by a light coupling lens array to the active matrix of pixel elements of an image forming means such as a transmissive liquid crystal light valve. The light source is comprised of a patterned matrix of individual, primary colored visible radiation emitters, such as individual phosphor elements, arranged in a manner suitable for the human eye to integrate the individual primary colored lights into a single mixture color. The light coupling lens array collects substantially all of the light rays emitted from each primary colored light emitter and focuses them on a respective one of the transparent electrodes in the active matrix, as a real image smaller than the size of the electrode. A suitable light coupling lens array is a gradient index lens array, a multiple layer, two dimensional array of microlenses functionally analogous to an array of strip lenses, or a microlens array. A twisted nematic liquid crystal cell may be used in the image forming means to achieve a high contrast display. Use of the light coupling lens array to collect and focus the light rays from the light source permits the focused light to pass through an entrance polarizer with minimal scattering or divergence, and then through the respective transparent electrode in the active matrix unobscured by the opaque pixel interconnect elements. More efficient use of a larger percentage of the light from the light source in this manner results in the formation of a bright, high contrast, full color image.

摘要: A method for achieving a color projection of an image directs light from a source to a dispersive element and disperses the light received by the element into a spectrum of light having different colors at different angles. Each color band of the resulting spectrum is focused, and the dispersed color bands are modulated in color bands corresponding to those received during the focusing onto a modulating element. Finally, the modulated light beams are recombined for projecting onto a projection surface.
