A holographic recording apparatus which can stably record data to be recorded onto a recording medium. The holographic recording apparatus of the present invention includes: a light source for generating a coherent reference light beam; a signal light generation unit including a spatial light modulator for spatially modulating the reference light beam in accordance with information data to generate a signal light beam; an interference unit for directing the signal light beam and the reference light beam toward a recording medium through an objective lens to form a region of a diffraction grating formed by an optical interference pattern within the recording medium; a lens positioning unit for positioning the objective lens with respect to a recording surface of the recording medium; and a light-receiving unit for detecting a returned beam that is returned from the recording medium through the objective lens. The signal light generation unit includes correction unit for detecting an amount of an optical positional offset between a recording data setting area in the spatial light modulator being supplied with said information data and an aperture area of the objective lens, and for adjusting a position of the recording data setting area in accordance with the amount of a optical positional offset.

An optical pickup device for focusing a light beam includes a focus error detecting optical element which splits and leads return light to a photodetector. The focus error detecting element has an area quadrisected by two division lines defining a plane substantially perpendicular to the optical path of the return light for applying astigmatism to the return light in directions rotated by 90° from each other and for separating the return light into at least four by the respective quadrants. The photodetector has a plurality of spaced light receiving elements for receiving the separated return light, each receiving element has contour lines corresponding to the division lines on an image plane on which a light beam is shaped into a circular beam. The light receiving elements are comprised of two light receiving areas divided by a bisect line extending substantially in parallel with one of the contour lines.

The method includes a step of interfering with a reference beam a signal beam spatially modulated by an information pattern which carries the information to generate interfered beams. The method includes a step of executing a recording sequence a plurality of times, the recording sequence including steps of irradiating the interfered beams onto a recording surface of the hologram recording medium to form a group of a plurality of holograms each corresponding to the information pattern. The method includes a step of completing the recording sequence. Different modulation conditions are set for at least one of the signal beam and the reference beam in one recording sequence and the subsequent recording sequence immediately after the one recording sequence.

The medium has a recording layer made of a photo-sensitive material, a reflective layer disposed on the opposite side of the recording layer from a light irradiated side, tracks formed on the reflective layer such that the tracks are spaced apart by a first pitch from each other to extend without intersection, and positioning marks formed on the reflective layer such that the positioning marks are spaced apart by a second pitch from each other in a direction in which the tracks extend. The second pitch is a function of the first pitch.
