摘要： The device for collecting blood specimens by venipuncture for laboratory tests consists of a hollow support fitted with a double-ended needle at one end and a vial with a plunger that can be fitted into and removed from the cavity in the support, the vial being sealed at one end by a pierceable membrane. In a preferred embodiment a mechanical system for automatic operation of the plunger is also envisaged. The double-ended needle consists of an active needle that enters the vein, positioned eccentrically to the axis of the support, and a passive needle that punctures the vial membrane eccentrically.

摘要： A syringe having a barrel adapted to receive a plunger with a through passageway from the bottom wall of a groove in which an O-ring seal is positioned to the rear surface of the plunger. Upon insertion of the plunger into the barrel, the O-ring will move to a position adjacent a rear wall defining the groove over the passageway and allow air to escape from within the barrel through the passageway. When the pressure used to seat the plunger against material within the barrel is removed, the plunger will rebound slightly causing the plunger to move relative to the O-ring so that the O-ring makes an air tight seal between the plunger and the barrel. When pressure is again applied to the plunger to press the material out of the barrel, the plunger will again move relative to the O-ring to again position the O-ring over the passageway, however, the O-ring will seal the passageway sufficiently to restrict escape of a significant amount of the viscous material through the passageway.

摘要： A blood collector comprising a collection container in the form of a tube having a forward end adapted for drawing of blood into the container and an opened rear end, a closure unit adapted for closing the opened rear end of the collection container, and a mechanism including a valving element for allowing passage of air when blood is flowing into said container and preventing passage of air and blood when said container is filled with blood, said valving element of said mechanism including an air passage and a filter member communicating with the air passage, said filter member comprising water insoluble but water-swellable polymeric material and provided at least at the contact portion of the closure member with collected blood. Air contained in the blood collecting space of the collection container is expelled through the valving element by the collected blood which rises to a desired level for expelling air from said space practically completely. As the blood contacts the water insoluble but water-swellable high polymeric material contained in filter member of the valving element, the material swells into gel body to block the air passage in the valving element connecting to outside of the collector. Thus blood analysis may be effected without influences by outside air and air otherwise contained in the blood collecting space.

摘要： A device for taking specimens for laboratory analysis, specimens being of a fluid type such as body liquids or may be liquids of a different source. The device comprises a hollow body member with a closed end and an open end. The closed end has orifice therethrough which orifice is eccentric with respect to the longitudinal axis of the body member. A plunger having a plunger tip means is inserted into the body member for the purpose of accurately varying the internal volume of the device. The closed end is provided with an exteriorly mounted closure which may be of a rotatable type or a sliding plate type. The closure contains an orifice which may be aligned with the orifice in the closed end to take specimens into the device and then the closure may be moved with reference to the body member to misalign the orifices so that the orifice in the body member is closed and the specimen cannot be ejected from the device. Sealing means are provided between the closure interior and the exterior of the closed end around the orifice in the body member. The present embodiment of the invention includes the presence of an agent which is applied to the collected specimen for the purpose of maintaining it, culturing it, or defining the composition of the specimen. The agent may be placed on the interior of the hollow body member in which configuration it contacts the specimen immediatedly upon the entry of the specimen into the hollow body. The agent may be placed in a recess on the interior of the closure which recess is brought into registration with the orifice in the closed end only by movement of the closure so there is subsequent contact between the agent and the specimen. This avoids any communication between the specimen source and the specimen agent or specimen after its contact with the agent. There is also disclosed a novel plunger having a pivotal member on the stem of the plunger which engages the open end of the hollow body member of any type of syringe to prevent accidental ejection of a collected specimen.

A needle is connected to a flexible transparent tube that includes an air exit vent with a nonwet filter so air, but not blood, can exit the vent under arterial blood pressure. A special needle adapter prevents formation of air bubbles, and a baffle system in the needle minimizes blood and air mixing. A clamp on the reservoir pinches off an air contaminated blood segment and can longitudinally strip a different blood segment which is not air contaminated. The tubular reservoir has an oxygen blocking coating, and its internal surface includes a dry anticoagulant coating.

摘要： A medical fluid collection system includes a double ended needle having a disc secured thereto. A resilient elastomeric sleeve is secured to the disc to extend around a portion of the needle, and a pierceable translucent plug is secured to the sleeve such that the plug is situated over one end of the needle in an extended position to prevent fluids from leaking therefrom. This plug is preferably provided with a convex outer surface adjacent the one end of the needle and is moveable along the needle to a retracted position in which the one end of the needle extends out of the plug. The sleeve acts to bias the plug into the extended position. A fluid collection device includes a barrel which defines a bore. A piston is slidingly and sealingly positioned in the bore, and a pierceable diaphragm is provided to seal an interior volume of the bore between the piston and the diaphragm. The diaphragm defines a recess shaped to receive and position the outer surface of the plug such that, when the plug is positioned in the recess and the barrel is urged toward the disc, the one end of the needle passes through the plug and the diaphragm into the interior volume of the barrel. In addition, a rod or cord is attached to the piston to extend outside of the barrel, and locking members are provided on the barrel to lock the rod or cord in position. The rod or cord and the locking members are used to develop a vacuum inside the barrel to aid in drawing fluids through the double ended needle.
