摘要: An apparatus includes a housing, a fluid reservoir, a flow control mechanism, and an actuator. The housing defines an inner volume and has an inlet port that can be fluidically coupled to a patient and an outlet port. The fluid reservoir is disposed in the inner volume to receive and isolate a first volume of a bodily-fluid. The flow control mechanism is rotatable in the housing from a first configuration, in which a first lumen places the inlet port is in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir, and a second configuration, in which a second lumen places the inlet port in fluid communication with the outlet port. The actuator is configured to create a negative pressure in the fluid reservoir and is configured to rotate the flow control mechanism from the first configuration to the second configuration after the first volume of bodily-fluid is received in the fluid reservoir.

The actuator is at least partially disposed in the inner volume and has a proximal end portion that includes an engagement portion and a distal end portion that includes a sealing member. The engagement portion is configured to allow a user to selectively move the actuator between a first configuration such that bodily fluid can flow from the port to the pre-sample reservoir, and a second configuration such that bodily fluid can flow from the port to a sample reservoir defined at least in part by the sealing member and the housing.

摘要: The invention is directed to methods and devices for efficient separation of plasma from whole blood which are suitable for point of care use in resource poor environments. In some embodiments, elements of such devices comprise (a) a sample collection receptacle (SCR) with at least one port, the sample collection receptacle capable of holding a predetermined volume of a sample of undiluted whole blood drawn through a port; (b) a filter chamber having an inlet and an outlet, and containing at least one filter capable of separating plasma from blood cells as sample passes from an inlet side to an outlet side of the at least one filter whenever the filter chamber is placed in fluid communication with a port of the sample collection receptacle; and (c) a manually driven pump operationally associated with the SCR and filter chamber for (i) drawing a predetermined volume of sample into the SCR by a first user action and (ii) driving the predetermined volume at a substantially constant linear flow under a pressure not exceeding 2 psi from the SCR through the filter chamber and the outlet of the filter chamber by a second user action.

摘要: A retractable needle assembly includes a housing having a sidewall defining a hollow bore, and an elongate plunger, the distal end of the plunger forming a reservoir within the hollow bore for containing a fluid therein. The plunger is adapted for slideable movement within the hollow bore. The assembly includes a hub disposed within the hollow bore and at least partially supporting a cannula therewith, and a needle retraction member engaged with the hub for manually selectable advancement with respect to a portion of the housing. The needle retraction member may be advanced from an initial position in which at least a portion of the needle is disposed outside the housing, to a retracted position in which the needle is fully surrounded by the housing. The elongate plunger may be advanced about the hub for extracting the fluid into the reservoir or expelling the fluid from the reservoir.

摘要: In one or more embodiments, there is a dual syringe for the collection of fluid samples which enables taking two distinct samples, and a method of use thereof. Preferably the dual syringe is for single use. Generally, the dual syringe has three components: an outer barrel; an inner barrel that fits inside the outer barrel, locks to the outer barrel and has a rubber fitting on its tip so it can function as a plunger for the outer barrel; and a plunger for the inner barrel. There is a one-way valve in a nozzle opening or passage of the inner syringe enabling inward flow only. In a method of use, an initial portion of sample fluid, e.g., from a sampling port of a bioreactor vessel, is drawn into the inner barrel of the device by pulling on the plunger. The one-way valve prevents backflow of that initial portion of sample fluid thereby protecting the ideally aseptic chamber of the outer barrel. A subsequent sample can then be collected in the outer barrel without the two samples by overcoming or otherwise unlocking the inner barrel from the outer barrel, and pulling on the inner barrel. The sample in the outer barrel is distinct from the sample in the inner barrel. Each barrel can establish direct communication with the device tip, allowing the user to draw two distinct samples that do not interact with each other.
