    摘要: An artificial ventricle for use as part of a total artificial heart for implantation within a living being as part of its circulatory system. The ventricle includes a soft and flexible blood pumping sac which can be collapsed to the substantially flattened, squeezed or rolled-up structure of much reduced size. The sac includes inlet and outlet ports to permit the flow of blood therethrough and is contained within a semi-rigid and removable enclosure which provides pumping means for driving blood flow through the ventricle. The semi-rigid shell includes open and closed configurations to allow emplacement of the shell around an attached ventricle already sutured in place as part of the circulatory system. Removal of the rigid shell is likewise feasible without disturbing the attached ventricle.

    摘要: A ventricular assist device and a method of manufacturing the ventricular assist device. The device is generally flat in shape and gently curved so that it may be comfortably implanted under the skin or inside the chest of a patient. The device includes a housing comprising an atrial blood chamber, an atrial compliance chamber, a ventricular blood chamber and a ventricular pjmping chamber. Blood is introduced through an inlet port into the atrial blood chamber. An atrial compliance membrane within the housing separates the atrial blood chamber from the atrial compliance chamber and responds to the changing volume of blood. The ventricular blood chamber receives the blood from the atrial blood chamber through a flap valve which is formed as an integral extension of the compliance membrane. A pumping membrane within the housing separates the ventricular blood chamber from the ventricular pumping chamber and is displaced by a drive fluid to expel blood out of the ventricular blood chamber through an outlet port that is controlled by a second valve mechanism. The device is manufactured using a novel vacuum forming technique that is both simple and inexpensive.

    摘要: A positive displacement pump for delivery of blood, or the like, from patients to an extracorporeal circuit, for purification, as in hemodialysis treatments. The pump is small, and sufficiently inexpensive to be discarded after one use. The pump comprises a single blood chamber attached to inlet and outlet conduits separated from the chamber and each other by low resistance flapper valves. The flapper valves are integral with a flexible diaphragm which forms one side of the blood chamber and are operative to close the outlet valve and to open the inlet valve to fill the blood cavity responsive to withdrawal of the diaphragm from the blood chamber cavity and to reverse each valve upon penetration of the diaphragm into the blood chamber to deliver uniformly small increments of blood to an artificial kidney or other blood treatment device.
