Abstract:
An airbag arrangement comprising: an airbag; a housing (1), formed of plastics material, for containing the airbag in a deflated, folded condition; a cover (5), formed of flexible material, and attached to the airbag housing (1) by a seal around a substantial portion of the periphery of the housing (1). The seal may be by heat or pressure sensitive glue, by ultrasonic or vibration welding or by deformable lugs (9). This arrangement is cheaper to produce and quicker to assemble, and has the advantage of being generally tamper-proof, since any tampering with the package will be immediately evident from detachment of the cover or tears therein.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for folding together an inflatable airbag jacket of an airbag module for motor vehicles, in which the at least partly spread out airbag jacket is arranged in at least one folding pocket and a folding volume of the folding pocket which contains the airbag jacket is reduced in size. The invention also relates to a folding apparatus.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a device for fixing a gas bag in its folded position. The device comprises a one-piece hollow body, which has a U-shaped cross-sectional profile, a first and a second side wall, a connecting web and a flap section formed on the first side wall. A clip connection is provided by means of which the flap section can be connected with the second side wall having a bracket. Two longitudinal slits are incorporated in the flap section and an elastically flexible closure hook is provided which is separated from the flap section by the two longitudinal slits. The closure hook has a thickened free end which when the body is closed engages behind the bracket formed on the second side wall. Further, the invention relates to a side gas bag module.
Abstract:
A fabric cover (9, FIG. 2a), which is shrinkable at least in part, for encapsulating at least part of an expandable object such as an automotive airbag (1), the fabric cover being provided with a predetermined region of weakness (13), preferably a catch thread holding the edges of a woven fabric together to form a tubular or flat cover, which region of weakness will rupture when the said object expands by greater than a predetermined amount, e.g. in an automobile accident. The region of weakness (13) and preferably fabric regions (11) immediately adjacent thereto may be of a contrasting color to facilitate alignment of the region of weakness in the direction of expansion of the expandable object.
Abstract:
A gas bag module includes a gas bag stowed folded in a housing. To provide a gas bag module which permits a controlled emergence of the gas bag on it being activated and, more particularly, permits a reduction in the velocity with which the cover hits an obstacle, said gas bag is surrounded by a sleeve provided with a tear line, said sleeve permitting free deployment of said gas bag in the main direction away from the bottom of said housing up to a fraction of its volume, the sleeve then being tensioned by the force of expansion of said deploying gas bag and allowing further expansion of said gas bag laterally away from said main direction until said sleeve is torn open at said tear line, permitting further expansion of said gas bag also in said main direction.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a collision-protection system for passengers of motor vehicles. In a manner which is known in principle, an airbag is automatically inflated in the event of an accident. In order to control the direction and speed of expansion, the airbag is wholly or partially encased by a tough, plastically deformable film, which is overstretched and torn open as the airbag is inflated.
Abstract:
An air bag module includes an air bag and a container including spaced apart end walls. An elongated inflator extends between the end walls for discharging gas to inflate the air bag. A lug projects outwardly from an inflator end of the inflator and the lug engages one of the end walls of the container. First and second opposing spring tabs are included on the one end wall of the container. The spring tabs each include a retention end which are spaced apart from each other and define a retention opening therebetween which is narrower than the lug on the inflator end. Upon insertion of the lug into the retention opening, the lug engages the retention ends of the spring tabs and deflects the spring tabs such that the retention ends of the spring tabs each grip against the lug to cooperatively capture the lug between spring tabs and prevent removal of the inflator from the container.
Abstract:
An airbag cushion assembly including an airbag cushion, a cushion strap and a horn switch pocket for use with a driver side airbag module. The horn switch pocket is for mounting a horn switch assembly and is secured to a tether of the cushion strap. The cushion strap retains the airbag cushion in a deflated, folded position prior to mounting the airbag cushion assembly within an airbag module and prior to inflation of the airbag cushion. The horn switch pocket is positioned on the tether so as to be tightly located between the tether and a horn activation face of an airbag module cover of the airbag module. The horn switch pocket can be made from the same material as the tether and the airbag cushion, and the horn switch pocket is sewn to the tether. According to one variation of the present invention, an airbag cushion assembly is provided having an airbag cushion and a horn pocket sewn directly to the airbag cushion.
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing a steering wheel central pad having a skeleton (1) provided with an open dish (2), for receiving an inflatable bag in a folded state, and with a soft covering (5). At least the inflatable bag (3) in the folded state is placed in the dish. The opening of the dish (2) is closed off using a sealing material (4) which can tear when the bag inflates. The skeleton, together with its dish (2) provided with the bag (3) and with the sealing material (4), is placed in a mold for manufacturing the soft covering by injection of plastic. Then, plastic is injected into the mold in order to form the soft covering (5).
Abstract:
An air bag device for use in front of a passenger seat of an automobile includes a casing disposed in the instrument panel of the automobile, a folded air bag housed in the casing and inflatable through the upper opening upon impact, and a lid openably joined to the casing in covering relationship to the upper opening. An air bag restraint guide or protective cloth is joined to the casing for preventing the air bag from directly contacting an edge of the upper opening when the air bag is inflated through the upper opening.
