The invention relates to a device for the transverse and/or longitudinal machining of wood workpieces having at least one clamping table which is rotatable or tiltable about at least one pivot axis. The clamping table is connected to a drive gear of a servo drive positioned in the pivot axis. So that the servo drive of the device can also operate free from play during a machining operation, an output gear wheel having front and rear tooth flanks and connected to a servo motor via a drive gear and a sprocket wheel are secured on an output shaft. The sprocket wheel is in engagement with a tension chain which exerts a torque on the output shaft in a predetermined rotational direction, one free end of the tension chain being connected to a controllable fluid cylinder so that in any rotational direction of the servo motor or of the output shaft, either front or rear tooth flanks of the output gear wheel are constantly in contact with corresponding flanks of the drive gear.

A bevel gear backlash adjusting mechanism is disclosed in which a bevel gear is carried by a bearing and is rotatably carried by a stationary shaft so as to be axially shiftable therewith. The stationary shaft includes a supporting portion carried by the frame of a power tool, the supporting portion having a section slotted at an angle to the axis of the shaft. An adjustable slide is also supported by the frame and extends into the angled slotted section of the stationary shaft with an edge thereof formed as a ramp at an angle corresponding to the angle of the slotted section and in engagement therewith. Motion of the adjustable slide normal to the shaft will influence axial motion of the stationary shaft and the bevel gear carried thereon so as to allow an adjustment of the mesh between the bevel gear and its associated bevel gear.

Disclosed is a carrier moving mechanism for preventing occurrence of the backlash between a screw shaft and a carrier transmitted by this screw shaft. This carrier moving mechanism comprises a screw shaft and a carrier having secured thereon first and second nuts having teeth to be engaged with the lead of this screw shaft, in which the teeth of the first nut are brought into contact with one side face of the lead of the screw shaft and the teeth of the second nut are brought into contact with the other side face of the lead of the screw shaft and the carrier is moved through these first and second nuts by rotation of the screw shaft. This carrier moving mechanism is characterized in that the carrier moving mechanism comprises a supporting mechanism which supports one of the first and second nuts on the carrier so that the supported nut can be rotated in the rotation direction of the screw shaft but the movement of the supported nut in the axial direction of the screw shaft is restricted, bias means for biassing the supported nut to rotate the supported nut in the direction eliminating the backlash and inhibiting means for inhibiting the supported nut from rotating in the direction opposite to the above backlash-eliminating rotation direction, whereby occurrence of the backlash to be caused by wearing of the teeth of the supported nut and/or the lead of the screw shaft is prevented.

A motor-driven rotating table positioning device has a bullgear engaged by two pinions each driven by the high-efficiency worm and gear set. These two worm and gear sets are connected by a coupling shaft and an adjustable coupling which allows a desired torsion to be maintained in the coupling shaft thereby eliminating any table backlash caused by the bullgear, pinions and high-efficiency worm and gear sets. For safety in the event of motor failure, the motor is coupled to the coupling shaft by a low-efficiency or self-locking worm and gear set.

A drive mechanism for a spindle of a tool machine, in particular a tool machine having a hob rotatably mounted thereon. Worm gearing is provided for driving the workpiece relative to the hob. Clearance is normally provided between the teeth on the worm and the teeth on the worm gear. Structure is provided for eliminating the clearance so that the drive of the workpiece is a positive drive and no errors exist due to the clearance normally provided between the teeth on the gear and the worm gear. In the particular embodiment disclosed in this application, a second worm is provided and is driven by the first-mentioned worm and worm gearing. The helix angle on the second worm lies outside of the automatic locking area and, in turn, acts onto a braking mechanism.
