Described is the use of oleophilic esters of ecologically compatible polycarboxylic acids with oil-soluble and ecologically compatible monofunctional alcohols and/or polyfunctional alcohols which may also be watersoluble as the oil phase or as a component of the oil phase of oil-based or water-based drilling fluids and other fluid drill-hole treatment agents. The oleophilic polycarboxylic acid esters are especially suitable as component of the continuous oil phase of inverted fluids of the W/O type. Here--if rheologically suitable compounds will be employed--they may comprise the at least predominant portion of the continuous oil phase; but also possible is the concomitant use of complex oleophilic polycarboxylic acid esters, which are not or just to a restricted degree fluid in a temperature range of from 0.degree. C. to 20.degree. C., as an additive in fluid oils of the class of the non-polluting oils. Here, suitable oil mixing phases especially are oleophilic alcohols, ethers, respective esters of monocarboxylic acids and fluid oils based on oleophilic carbonic acid diesters.

Organophilic polyphenolic materials which are effective fluid loss control additives for oil base well-working fluids are prepared from a polyphenolic material and one or more phosphatides. Preferred phosphatides are phosphoglycerides obtained from vegetable oils, most preferably commercial lecithin. Preferred polyphenolic materials comprise one or more of: humic acid; lignosulfonic acid; lignins; phenolic condensates; tannins; the oxidized, sulfonated, or sulfomethylated derivatives of these polyphenolic materials; and the water soluble or colloidally dispersible salts of these polyphenolic materials or these derivatives thereof.

The present invention relates to a filtration control additive for use in invert emulsion drilling fluids; the method of preparing such additives; the invert emulsion drilling fluid produced therefrom; and a method of drilling, completing, and working over a subterranean well, utilizing such drilling fluid containing the filtration control additive which is utilized in a water-in-oil, emulsion-type subterranean drilling fluid. The additive comprises the pyrolyzed product obtained by intermixing and heating a finely divided humic acid-containing material and a primary amine having an alkyl radical of 10 to 20 carbon atoms or a primary amine having one alkyl-substituted phenyl radical, the alkyl radical having 10 to 20 carbon atoms. The amine may also be a secondary amine having at least one alkyl radical of 8 to 20 carbon atoms.

The invention provides novel humic acid derivatives obtained by reacting humic acid-containing materials with a noval amide mixture comprising a polyamide and an amido-amine containing one free amino group per molecule. The novel amide mixture is obtained by reacting under amidation conditions a fatty acid containing 16 to 30 carbon atoms with an amine mixture comprising aminoethylethanolamine (AEEA) and one or more polyethylenepolyamines (PEPA) containing 3 or more amino groups per molecule, wherein the weight ratio of AEEA/PEPA is in the range from about 0.25/1 to about 3/1, and wherein the amount of fatty acid is less than the amount required to amidate all of the amino groups and greater than the amount required to amidate all but one amino group per molecule.

The present invention relates to sulfonated thermoplastic terpolymers which are terpolymers of t-butyl styrene, styrene and sodium styrene sulfonate wherein these sulfonated terpolymers function as viscosification agents when added to oil-based drilling muds which are the fluids used to maintain pressure, cool drill bits and lift cuttings from the holes in the drilling operation for oil and gas wells. The sulfonated thermoplastic terpolymer of the latex have about 5 to 100 meg. of sulfonate groups per 100 grams of the sulfonated thermoplastic terpolymer, wherein the sulfonated groups are neutralized with a metallic cation or an amine or ammonium counterion. A polar cosolvent can optionally be added to the mixture of oil drilling mud and sulfonated thermoplastic polymer, wherein the polar cosolvent increases the solubility of the sulfonated thermoplastic terpolymer in the oil drilling mud by decreasing the strong ionic interactions between the sulfonate groups of the sulfonated polymer.The drilling muds formed from these latices of the sulfonated thermoplastic terpolymers exhibits markedly improved low and high temperature rheological properties as compared to drilling muds formed from sulfonated thermoplasitc copolymers.

Disclosed is a method of and compositions for reducing the fluid loss from a drilling fluid which allows a low colloid, enhanced penetration rate drilling fluid to be used in a drilling operation. The invention provides a concentrated suspension or pill of a fluid loss control additive and a seepage loss control additive in a liquid which is compatible with the drilling fluid. This pill is circulated throughout a borehole containing the drilling fluid and thereafter isolated from the drilling fluid upon reaching the surface. The fluid loss control additive and the seepage loss control additive deposit on the sides of the borehole, thus reducing the loss of fluid to the formations drilled, and the excess not deposited is subsequently isolated from the drilling fluid so as not to be dispersed throughout the drilling fluid and substantially increasing the colloid content of the drilling fluid.
