Abstract: A braking system for a vehicle includes a clutch. The clutch includes a rotational axis, a clutch housing, arranged to be rotationally fixed relative to the vehicle and sealed to an axle shaft end, a clutch carrier arranged to be rotationally fixed to a first drive portion of the axle shaft end, a clutch pack and a piston for compressing the clutch pack to brake the axle shaft end. The clutch pack includes a first plurality of clutch plates, rotationally fixed to the clutch housing, and a second plurality of clutch plates intermixed with the first plurality of clutch plates and rotationally fixed to the clutch carrier. The clutch may also include a plurality of springs disposed between individual clutch plates of the first plurality of clutch plates, or individual clutch plates of the second plurality of clutch plates.

Abstract: In a brake device of a transmission, rotation side friction plates are engaged with a cylindrical part of a rotation side holding member, and fixed side friction plates are engaged with a spline part that is provided on an outer peripheral surface of an inner cylindrical part of a fixed side holding member opposed to a cylindrical part of the rotation side holding member. The fixed side holding member includes an inflow oil passage that supplies lubricating oil from the outside to the inside of the radial direction thereof. An annular space communicating with an inflow oil passage is provided on the inside of the cylindrical part of the fixed side holding member. Oil discharge holes supplying lubricating oil, which was flowed into the annular space, to the rotation side and fixed side friction plates are provided on the cylindrical part of the fixed side holding member.

Abstract: Components for an automatic motor vehicle transmission including a band brake drum, a clutch housing or hub having a seal surface or a clutch housing or hub utilized in a friction clutch assembly having a spline set. All of these components are fabricated of aluminum and the outer surface of the band brake drum, the housing or hub sealing surface and the area of the spline set includes a thin coating of a thermally sprayed steel material. The thermally sprayed steel material may be a low carbon steel such as SAE 1008 or 1010, a similar alloy, iron or other metal. The resulting components thus exhibit the weight saving of aluminum while providing excellent service life due to the enhanced strength and wear resistance provided by the thermally sprayed steel coating.

The fixed-side holding member is provided in a transmission casing so as not to rotate. The rotary-side holding member is provided in the transmission casing at a radially outer side of the fixed-side holding member and is rotatable about a central axis of the inner peripheral surface.
