摘要: A method for manufacturing an image fiber bundle that includes the steps of aligning a plurality of image fibers into a bundle, bonding the plurality of image fibers in at least three regions to form an image fiber bundle with a useable length and at least one useable sub-length, and inspecting the image fiber bundle for defective image fibers. The image fiber bundle includes flexible regions disposed between the bonded regions and the spacing of the bonded regions corresponds to a plurality of standardized lengths for fiberscopes.

摘要: A method for preparing glass strand pellets by stirring chopped glass strands in the presence of 10 to 25% of water, the strands being sized with a size containing an organosilane. The method performs stirring for long enough for an increase in density to be at least 67%, the stirring being performed using a single stirring equipment that at each instant imparts to the strands or forming pellets it contains the same stirring frequency, the pellets finally formed containing, after drying, at least 95 wt % glass. A film-forming agent is in contact with the glass strands during the stirring at the latest.

摘要: The invention relates to a field emission display constructed using an array of fibers and an orthogonal array of emitter electrodes. Each fiber in the fiber array contains an extraction electrode, spacer, a high voltage electrode and a phosphor layer. The array of emitter electrodes consists of carbon nanotube emitters attached to conductive electrodes. The emitter electrodes are separated using non-conductive fibers. A getter material in the form of a wire is placed within the array of emitter electrodes to maintain a high vacuum within the display.

摘要: A two-part sizing system for making colorless, densified fiber pellets of a reinforcing fiber material. The densified product may be advantageously produced by first applying a precursor size composition to reinforcing fiber strands, chopping the reinforcing fiber strands into chopped strand segments, applying a binder size, and densifying the chopped strand segments to form densified fiber pellets. The binder size is formulated using a copolymer of maleic anhydride which generates a product free from discoloration. In the process of making the pellets, the sized chopped strands are densified by tumbling in a rotating chamber for a period of time sufficient to increase their density but insufficient to degrade the fibers to a point where composite articles formed from such pellets have lower tensile or impact strengths than comparable composite articles formed from unpelletized strand segments.

摘要: A hexagonal mold is formed by a unitary base and a unitary cover. Each of the base and the cover form three of the six surfaces of a hexagonal mold cavity when the cover is placed on top of the base. The hexagonal mold may be used to form field emission display spacers and field emission display microchannels by placing etchable single fibers in the hexagonal mold to form hexagonal multiple fiber preforms. The preforms are then drawn to form multiple fibers that are placed in a rectangular mold to form a rectangular fiber block. The rectangular fiber block is then sliced into sheets which are then placed between a field emission display baseplate and a field emission display faceplate.

摘要: A system for making densified glass fiber pellets from chopped segments of multi-filament glass strand is described. The densified pellets may be advantageously produced by hydrating chopped glass strands and then pelletizing them by tumbling in a rotary drum, and densifying the resulting pellets by tumbling in a rotating zig-zag or undulating tube for a period of time sufficient to increase their density but insufficient to degrade the fibers to a point where composite articles formed from such pellets have lower tensile or impact strengths than comparable composite articles formed from unpelletized strand segments.

摘要: A packed tube of generally parallel aligned fibers is described, wherein the fibers are packed therein at densities of 60 to 100 percent of the theoretical packing density based on the fiber diameters used based on the selected fiber pitch pattern and preferably at 70 to 100 percent of the theoretical. Glass fibers which can be porous and/or hollow are preferred.

摘要: An apparatus for manufacturing constrictions in fibers characterized by a stretching device for stretching the fiber and a heating device for brief local heating of the stretched fiber to a softening temperature. To improve the reliability and reproducibility of the constrictions formed in the fiber, the stretching device includes an arrangement which limits the maximum stretching force applied to the fiber and includes two exactly aligned guide grooves, which are spaced apart with the heating means disposed therebetween, for positioning the fiber during the heating and stretching steps. To produce the exactly aligned guide grooves, the method includes providing a substrate having a rectilinear guide groove, securing the substrate on a support member and subsequently removing a center portion of the substrate to leave a pair of spaced substrate sections having the aligned grooves.

摘要: A method of manufacturing a fiber-optical coupling element by fusion of two monomode fibers. The fiber cores are made of a core glass, the American softening temperature of which is at least 80.degree. C. higher than that of the cladding glass. The fibers are heated to a temperature between 520.degree. and 560.degree. C. By the method, fibers can be fused to form a coupling element without undesirable deformation of the fiber cores.
