A cathode ray tube apparatus for a projection TV system which improves the color purity of the luminescence in the cathode ray tube, reduces the chromatic aberration by the projection lens, enables the same type of projection lens to be mounted for all of the green, red and blue CRT apparatuses, and enables manufacturing costs to be slashed by such a common use of components. A light-absorbing agent is incorporated into the panel glass so that the transmittance having the light of wavelengths other than the main wavelength of the spectrum of luminescence of the phosphor of the CRT apparatus, is reduced below the transmittance of the light of the main wavelength. By incorporating this agent into the panel glass of a green CRT apparatus the average value of the transmittance of the light of the wavelength in the range of 500 nm to 560 nm becomes higher than the transmittance of the light of the wavelengths outside this range. Alternatively, by incorporating the agent into the panel glass of a red CRT apparatus the average value of the transmittance of the light of the wavelength in the range of 600 nm to 700 nm is increased as compared with the transmittance of the light of the wavelength in the range of 500 nm to 600 nm.

A field emission display device having thin film diamond cathodes and a method for producing the display device are disclosed. The field emission display device has an insulating layer having circular pattern apertures, and the field emission diamond cathodes formed in the apertures of the insulating layer respectively. The display device is formed by forming an insulating layer on a cathode layer, etching the insulating layer using a photoresist so as to form the apertures in the insulating layer, removing the photoresist from the insulating layer and forming a separation layer on the insulating layer, forming a plurality of thin-film diamond cathodes in the apertures and, at the same time, forming a diamond layer on the separation layer, and removing the separation layer together with the diamond layer from the insulating layer through a lift off process.

A projection cathode-ray tube includes a transparent protective layer interposed between a face panel and an optical multilayered interference film. In order to prevent a browning discoloration from occurring on the glass surface of the face panel caused by a direct chemical reaction between the glass surface and the optical multilayered interference filter due to an electron bombardment, the transparent protective layer, made from inorganic materials, is disposed between the face plate and the optical multilayered interference filter. The transparent protective layer is made of silicon dioxide (SiO.sub.2) or aluminum oxide (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3), and has a thickness of 0.05 micrometer or less, or 0.5 micrometer or more, respectively.

A video color image projector which includes a block of crossed dichroic mirrors for combining the light rays from image rasters on respective monochrome image display devices and a projection lens for projecting the composite color rays so as to form an enlarged color image on a display screen. Each display device has a faceplace which is convex on the interior surface thereof and having thereon an interference filter in the form of an internal angularly reflecting coating (IARC). Each faceplate is liquid - coupled to a negative power lens element, so that the faceplate, coupling liquid (or gel) and such lens element effectively constitute a single negative power field flattener lens at each entrance side of the dichroic block. The composite color rays at the exit side of the dichroic block are projected on the display screen by an assembly of lens elements which includes at least one optically positive lens element. The focal length of the complete projection lens formed by such assembly and each of the negative field flattener lenses may be from 0.5 to 0.9 times the diagonal D of the image raster on each display device, so that the projector is sufficiently compact to be included in a cabinet suitable for consumer television receivers.

A projection cathode-ray tube includes a multilayered interference film interposed between a face plate and a cathode-ray tube. In order to improve brightness in a direction of the normal, then on a face plate, a phosphor layer is composed of a first layer substantially consisting of large size phosphor particles and a second layer substantially consisting of small size phosphor particles. In addition, a phosphor density of the phosphor layer is set from 20 to 50% larger than that necessary to produce a maximum brightness on a cathode-ray tube without the multilayered interference film. The phosphor particles of the phosphor layer are preferably material having a high reflectance.

In a projection type television apparatus, a first and a second color selecting device are located on an optical light path passing through a cathode ray tube and a series of projection lenses are disposed in front of the cathode ray tube without a color selecting device therein. The first color selecting device has a high refractive factor to light having a wavelength of 570nm or more and the second color selecting device has a high reflection factor or a high absorption factor to light having a wavelength of 520nm or less. With this color selecting device, the range of color reproduction can be much more improved. This thus causes an increased degree of color purity of green light at the central and peripheral areas of the cathode ray tube. Moreover, with this arrangement, it becomes easy to conserve the characteristic of the color selecting devices and to facilitate the manufacturing operation.

A cathode-ray tube (10) includes a prefocusing lens (14) and an adjacent high-voltage einzel focus lens (16) to form an electron beam with low spherical aberration. The high-voltage einzel focus lens includes a central lens element (52) positioned between a pair of outer lens elements (54) and (56). The outer lens elements receive a common high-voltage potential of more than about 12 kilovolts. The prefocusing lens includes a G3 electrode positioned between an anode (48) and a first one of the outer lens elements of the einzel focus lens. The G3 electrode receives the high voltage applied to the outer lens elements. In a preferred embodiment, the G3 electrode is a flat end disc plate (57b) on the end of the first one of the outer lens elements.

Projection-television display tube includes a band pass or Fabry-Perot interference filter between the display window and the luminescent screen, resulting in the elimination of undesirable luminescent emissions both above and below the wavelength region of interest. A three-tube color projection display device includes such a filter in at least the green emitting display tube.

Projection television display tubes having an evacuated envelope (1) with a display window (4) which on its inside comprises a display screen (5) and in front of which a light permeable second window (6) is provided on its outside, a cooling liquid (16) flowing through the space (7) between the display window (4) and the second window (6) from at least one inlet aperture to at least one outlet aperture (17) namely by temperature differences in said cooling liquid. When in such a projection television display tube at the area of the windows (4, 6) and around the said space (7) a cooling jacket (8) is provided which comprises at least one duct (9) which transports the cooling liquid (6) from the outlet aperture(s) to the inlet aperture(s) of the said space, an effective cooling is obtained at a power between 12 and 25-30 W without external pipes or a heat exchanger. As a result of the circulation of the cooling liquid around the tube end at the area of the windows there is a good temperature compensation so that fewer stresses occur in the glass of the display tube.
