Abstract: In a method to improve backwards compatibility when decoding high-dynamic range images coded in a wide color gamut (WCG) space which may not be compatible with legacy color spaces, hue and/or saturation values of images in an image database are computed for both a legacy color space (say, YCbCr-gamma) and a preferred WCG color space (say, IPT-PQ). Based on a cost function, a reshaped color space is computed so that the distance between the hue values in the legacy color space and rotated hue values in the preferred color space is minimized HDR images are coded in the reshaped color space. Legacy devices can still decode standard dynamic range images assuming they are coded in the legacy color space, while updated devices can use color reshaping information to decode HDR images in the preferred color space at full dynamic range.

Abstract: Coding syntaxes in compliance with same or different VDR specifications may be signaled by upstream coding devices such as VDR encoders to downstream coding devices such as VDR decoders in a common vehicle in the form of RPU data units. VDR coding operations and operational parameters may be specified as sequence level, frame level, or partition level syntax elements in a coding syntax. Syntax elements in a coding syntax may be coded directly in one or more current RPU data units under a current RPU ID, predicted from other partitions/segments/ranges previously sent with the same current RPU ID, or predicted from other frame level or sequence level syntax elements previously sent with a previous RPU ID. A downstream device may perform decoding operations on multi-layered input image data based on received coding syntaxes to construct VDR images.

Abstract: A high dynamic range input video signal characterized by either a gamma-based or a perceptually-quantized (PQ) source electro-optical transfer function (EOTF) is to be compressed. Given a luminance range for an image-region in the input, for a gamma-coded input signal, a rate-control adaptation method in the encoder adjusts a region-based quantization parameter (QP) so that it increases in highlight regions and decreases in dark regions, otherwise, for a PQ-coded input, the region-based QP increases in the dark areas and decreases in the highlight areas.

Abstract: Compared to traditional gamma-coded video, perceptually quantized video provides greater flexibility for the transmission and display management of high-dynamic range video, but it does not compresses as efficiently using existing standard codecs. Techniques are described to improve the coding efficiency of perceptually coded video by applying a color cross-talk transformation after the RGB/XYZ to LMS transformation. Such a transform increases luma and chroma correlation for color appearance models, but improves perceptual uniformity and overall coding efficiency for wide color gamut, HDR, signals.

A particular method includes accessing a video picture that includes multiple pictures combined into a single picture (826), accessing information indicating how the multiple pictures in the accessed video picture are combined (806, 808, 822), decoding the video picture to provide a decoded representation of at least one of the multiple pictures (824, 826), and providing the accessed information and the decoded video picture as output (824, 826). Some other implementations format or process the information that indicates how multiple pictures included in a single video picture are combined into the single video picture, and format or process an encoded representation of the combined multiple pictures.

Abstract: A multi-layer video system has a first layer encoder that encodes a first layer of video information, at least one second layer encoder that encodes at least one second layer of video information, and an encoder side reference processing unit (RPU) that estimates one or more of an optimal filter or an optimal process that applies on a reference picture that is reconstructed from the first video information layer, and processes a current picture of the second video information layer, based on a correlation between the first layer reconstructed reference picture. The correlation relates to a complexity characteristic that scaleably corresponds to the first video information layer reconstructed reference picture and the second video information layer current picture. A scalable video bitstream is outputted, which may be decoded by a compatible decoder. A decoder side RPU and the encoder side RPU function as an RPU pair.

Abstract: A sequence of visual dynamic range (VDR) images is encoded using a standard dynamic range (SDR) base layer and one or more enhancement layers. A predicted VDR image is generated from an SDR input by using a weighted, multi-band, cross-color channel prediction model. Exponential weights with an adaptable decay parameter for each band are also presented.
