An anodic oxidation process at an applied voltage/voltage supply time ratio of 11 V/min is performed for insulating films used in each circuit of an electro-optical device, typically an IPS method LCD, in particular for the surface of a common electrode formed on a resin film. The amount of formation of the extra anodic oxide film can be reduced by covering with an anodic oxide film, and a liquid crystal display device with high reliability and having an electrode with superior adhesion can be manufactured.

In a structure in which six active matrix regions 103 to 108 are integrated on one glass substrate, horizontal scanning control circuits 101 and 102 are commonly disposed for the respective active matrix regions 103 to 105 and 106 to 108. Then, the horizontal scanning control circuits 101 and 102 are operated at different timings, and images formed by the active matrix regions 103 to 105 and 106 to 108 are synthesized and projected. With this operation, the horizontal scanning frequency required for one horizontal scanning control circuit can be made half of the horizontal scanning frequency of the display screen.

The shape of a spacer for keeping a substrate interval constant is made such that it is a columnar shape, a radius R of curvature is 2 μm or less, a height H is 0.5 μm to 10 μm, a diameter is 20 μm or less, and an angle α is 65° to 115°. By doing so, it is possible to prevent the lowering of an opening rate and the lowering of light leakage due to orientation disturbance.

To provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display device having fine display performance, an interlayer insulating film 104 covering TFTs 102, 103 formed on a substrate 101 is first flattened by mechanical polishing typified by a CMP. Then pixel electrodes 106, 107 are formed thereon, and further, an insulating layer 108 covering the pixel electrodes is formed. And then, the insulating layer 108 is flattened by second mechanical polishing so that the surfaces of the pixel electrodes and the surface of the insulating layers 112, 113 form the same plane. By this, a difference in level disappears, and it is possible to prevent lowering of contrast or the like due to poor orientation of a liquid crystal material, diffused reflection of light, and the like.

A display device is provided, in which a member for sealing a liquid crystal is formed at sides of a pair of opposing substrates, so that a space other than an effective display region is made small and a substrate size is reduced. The pair of substrates is bonded to each other with a predetermined gap provided therebetween by an adhesive layer, and a liquid crystal injected in the gap is sealed in. The adhesive layer is formed closely to the sides of the substrates, so that a space where a sealing material is conventionally formed becomes unnecessary and the substrate size is made small. Moreover, a tape close to the adhesive layer is fixed to the sides of the substrates, so that an outer peripheral portion of the substrates is protected against impact, contamination, and electrostatic breakdown, and handling is simplified.

In the liquid crystal projector, dichroic mirrors arranged at different angles are used to separate white light into beams of light of three primary colors of R, G, and B, and the respective beams of light are incident on microlenses at different angles. The respective beams of light of the three primary colors are distributed by the microlenses to optical components corresponding to pixels, and highly collimated light beams can be obtained by the optical components. Since the highly collimated light beams are made incident on the pixels of the liquid crystal panel, the beams can be certainly made incident on desired pixels.
