Provided is a polar modulation apparatus which compensates for output characteristics of a power amplifier.A data generator (11) generates, from a baseband signal, an amplitude component signal and a phase component signal. A phase modulator (12) generates a phase modulated signal obtained by phase modulating the phase component signal. An adder (16) adds an amplitude offset voltage to the amplitude component signal. A power amplifier (13), which includes a first hetero-junction bipolar transistor, amplifies the phase modulated signal by using the amplitude component signal. A monitor unit (14) monitors the power amplifier (13) and outputs a monitor voltage. The control unit (15) calculates the amplitude offset voltage according to the monitor voltage and outputs the calculated amplitude offset voltage to the adder (16). A distance Lb from the rotation center of an elastic deforming part to center of gravity (point of application) of the image capturing unit is longer than a distance La from the rotation center of the elastic deforming part to the projection (power point). In the configuration, equivalent mass (apparent mass) of the image capturing unit becomes (Lb/La) times, and it causes deterioration in response. Consequently, the driving member having an ellipse-shaped section in which a value obtained by dividing the width in the longer direction of the section by the width in the shorter direction is 1.3 or larger is employed. As a result, heat dissipation of the driving member increases, so that response in the SMA actuator can be properly improved.

An art of a driving device for appropriately improving a response of an SMA actuator will be provided. A portable telephone 1 has an image stabilization system 10 for driving an image pickup unit 9 by a pair of driving members 15a and 15b functioning as actuators, thereby performing image stabilization. Driving members 15a and 15b are formed as a wire of shape memory alloy (SMA) and when a voltage is applied to both ends and a current is supplied, driving force is generated in the contraction direction. With respect to the wire diameter of the SMAs, the wire diameter of the SMAs is set between 10 μm and 80 μm, thus the mountability and response are improved appropriately.
