Abstract: A method of compensating a photo sensor (and a corresponding photo sensor with compensation) insures the accuracy of the photo sensor, e.g., over environmental variations or photo cell variations. The method comprises: providing a first signal indicative of a light level; providing a second signal indicative of an environmental parameter, e.g., temperature; and calculating, responsive to the first signal and the second signal, a compensated signal that is indicative of an absolute light level. The calculating can be performed by a processor and utilize calibration and compensation information or parameters, which can be obtained experimentally.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for communicating audio messages uses a two-way radio. An output audio message is asynchronously transmitted by generating a first acoustic signal in an input device of the radio. A determination is made whether the first acoustic signal is a command. If the acoustic signal is a command, then a response is generated in an output device, and the command is processed. Otherwise, the first acoustic signal is stored in an output buffer and then later sent as an output audio message only when a communications channel is available. An input audio message is asynchronously received in a receiver of the radio, and then stored in an input buffer. A second acoustic signal is generated which causes the stored input audio message to be sent to the output device only if the second acoustic signal is a play command.

Abstract: A neural network controller in parallel with a proportional-plus-integral (PI) feedback controller in a control system. At least one input port of the neural network for receiving an input signal representing a condition of a process is included. A first set of data is obtained that includes a plurality of output values of the neural network obtained during a training period thereof using a plurality of first inputs representing a plurality of conditions of the process. The process/plant condition signals generally define the process/plant, and may include one set-point as well as signals generated using measured systems variables/parameters. In operation, the neural network contributes to an output of the PI controller only upon detection of at least one triggering event, at which time a value of the first set of data corresponding with the condition deviation is added-in thus, contributing to the proportional-plus-integral feedback controller. The triggering event can be characterized as (a) a change in any one of the input signals greater-than a preselected amount, or (b) a detectable process condition deviation greater-than a preselected magnitude, for which an adjustment is needed to the process/plant being controlled. Also a method for controlling a process with a neural network controller operating in parallel with a IP controller is included.

Abstract: A rotating beacon employs an array of LEDs mounted on a rotor assembly in a pattern for unidirectional emission wherein the LEDs are excited through noncontact inductive coupling between a load coupling on the rotor assembly and a source coupling on the stator or mount element. In a particular embodiment, a primary sender flat coil of an air gap transformer is disposed concentrically forming a disc and mounted juxtaposed to a secondary receiver flat coil so that power can be conveyed across the air gap while the rotor is in motion. The transferred power excites substantially all of the LED array in a fixed pattern on the rotating mount. In a second embodiment, the air gap transformer has a primary sender coil is mounted coaxially with a secondary receiver coil (which is typically but not necessarily inside the primary coil), so the secondary, with the array can freely rotate and draw power from the source.

Abstract: An improved mitt for cold weather use is configured to provide a variety of modes of wear. The mitt is convertible between a fully closed position for covering the hand and fingers and open positions for exposure of the thumb and/or finger(s) or the entire hand. An internal pocket within the mitt permits continuous or intermittent warming of all or some of the fingers when the mitt is in either a generally open position or closed position. Insertion and removal of fingers and thumb relative the internal pocket is easily accomplished without use of the other hand. A thumb hole and/or finger hole for thumb/finger exposure is formed with an overlapping two-layer seal of stretchable material to prevent heat loss while ensuring easy thumb/finger insertion and removal. In one embodiment, stretchable fillets connect the terminal ends of the palm side and back side of the mitt to provide a snug fit about the wrist. The wearing modes include full exposure of a hand, exposure of the thumb and/or a finger(s), exposure of the four finger tips, and full hand coverage.
