摘要:
Network traffic encoded in a first protocol is transmitted across a first communications link, wherein the first protocol allows a first plurality of simultaneous logical connections. The transmitted network traffic is received at a first interface between the first communications link and a second communications link. The received network traffic is encapsulated within frames at the first interface, wherein the frames are generated in accordance with a second protocol, and wherein the second protocol does not allow any plurality of simultaneous logical connections that are allowed by the first protocol. The frames are transmitted from the first interface to a second interface across the second communications link. The frames are received and then unencapsulated network traffic is generated from the frames at the second interface, wherein the second interface is between the second communications link and a third communications link. The unencapsulated network traffic is routed to a selected logical connection of a second plurality of simultaneous logical connections across the third communications link, wherein transmission across the third communications link is in the first protocol.

A first special character encoded in a first protocol is transmitted across a first communications link. The transmitted first special character is received at a first interface between the first communications link and a second communications link. The first special character is converted to a second special character encoded in a second protocol, wherein the first special character is also defined for encoding in the second protocol. The second special character is transmitted across the second communications link. The second special character is received at a second interface between the second communications link and a third communications link. The second special character is converted back to the first special character. The first special character is transmitted across the third communications link.

Various embodiments for optimized power savings in a storage virtualization system are provided. First meta data for physical resources which describes a power status of a storage resource in one of a powered-on/read-write, powered-on/read only, and powered-off power state is created. Second meta data for each of the physical storage resources which determines an actual performance of the physical storage resources and which supports optimization of a powering-on and a powering-off of the physical storage resources is created. A write request from one of a host and application to logical and virtual storage resource is executed.

Provided are a method, system, and program for managing communication between a first device and a second device and performing a recovery action at the second device in response to a credit depletion notification from the first device. The second device assigns credits indicating a number of outstanding frames the first device may transmit to the second device. The second device receives a first type or second type of credit depletion notification from the first device indicating that the first device needs additional credits to transmit further frames to the second device. The second device performs one of a plurality of recovery actions depending on whether the first type or second type of credit depletion notification was received.

An example of the invention classifies disks drives based on their purpose and associating power-saving policies in multiple classes. The system implements Power On Demand, where a reduced power mode is enabled for every individual component of a storage subsystem. In addition, an embodiment of this invention extends a few power modes used in the prior art and allows almost infinite number of power modes when instructing a disk drive (via its I/O interface such as a SCSI or fibre channel interface) to enter a certain power saving mode. Furthermore, an embodiment of invention teaches a system and methods to save power in a disk system comprising a plurality of disk controllers and a plurality of disk drives, arranged in a plurality of arrays, where each array includes several (e.g., 4-16) disk drives.

Various embodiments for managing a virtual tape library cluster are provided. A virtual tape library system is enhanced by representing virtual tape resources in cluster nodes with a unique serial number. A least utilized cluster node is determined. One of the virtual tape resources represented within the least utilized cluster node is selected.

An apparatus and method to store data are disclosed. The method provides a data storage system comprising a fossilized data management apparatus interconnected with one or more data storage devices. The method provides to the fossilized data management apparatus information and meta data associated with that information, wherein the meta data comprises a format field, a context field, a retention field, a data management field, and a storage management field. The fossilized data management apparatus instructs the one or more data storage devices to write the information to the one or more data storage devices based upon the meta data format field.

A method to store information in a holographic data storage medium, wherein the method supplies a holographic data storage medium comprising an encoded focusing hologram and one or more encoded data holograms. The method disposes the holographic data storage medium in a holographic data storage system, and disposes a rotatable imaging lens at an (i)th orientation. The method illuminates the encoded focusing hologram to generate an (i)th reconstructed focusing image, projects that (i)th reconstructed focusing image through the rotatable imaging lens, and onto at optical detector array. The method then calculates an (i)th measured focusing metric, and determines if the (i)th measured focusing metric is greater than or equal to the threshold focusing metric. If the (i)th measured focusing metric is greater than or equal to the threshold focusing metric, then the method decodes the one or more encoded data holograms.

A circuit for detecting antigens on biosample tracks comprising a processor, an electromagnetic write head for magnetizing nanoparticles attached to the antigens via antibodies in response to a write signal from the processor, and a first amplifier for supplying power to the write head. The circuit further comprises a magneto-resistive read sensor for detecting the magnetized nanoparticles upon receiving a read signal from the processor, and a second amplifier for supplying power to the read sensor. The write head and read sensor may be part of a head module in a magnetic tape drive. Nanoparticles of differing magnetic properties may be selectively paired with antibodies associated with different antigens to allow different antigens to be detected upon a single scan by the read-sensor.

Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for accessing removable storage management services to obtain replacement instructions indicating whether to replace removable storage. Replacement information indicating whether to replace at least one of a plurality of managed removable storages is obtained by interfacing with a service computer over a network. Read/write error information for the at least one removable storage is gathered and transmitted to the service computer. Replacement instructions indicating whether to replace the at least one removable storage are received from the service computer.
