Abstract:
Method and apparatus providing enhanced sensitivity for GPS receivers by allowing coherent integration of a correlation over several code periods of a GPS signal in one embodiment, and by performing a time to frequency domain conversion to the output from a correlation processor in a second embodiment. In the case in which coherent integration is performed over several code periods, advantage is taken of the fact that CDMA cellular telephone base stations transmit information that allows the receiver to determine GPS time before beginning a GPS signal acquisition process. The integration can be expanded to include code periods from more than one bit period, if the GPS receiver takes advantage of the fact that known bit patterns are transmitted at particular times within the transmission from a GPS satellite. If no base station is within range, then the output from a correlator that integrates a correlation over one code period is used to generate values that are input to in a discrete time domain to frequency domain transform. The output from the transform will indicate the presence of a signal from a particular satellite and the offset between locally generated signal and the received GPS signal.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for use in a hybrid position location system. The method and apparatus combines measurements from Global Positioning System (GPS) and terrestrial transceiver stations to compute the location of a device. An algebraic solution to hybrid position location system equations is output from the method and apparatus. The method and apparatus determines the position of a device using a non-iterative method, as against the use of a conventional iterative least mean square method. The method of the present invention can be used to solve the location system equations in scenarios where a non-iterative solution is desirable. In certain scenarios, the location system equations may have two possible solutions. An iterative method would converge on one of the solutions, without any indication of the existence of the other ambiguous solution. Moreover, the iterative method may converge on the incorrect of the two ambiguous solutions. Use of the presently disclosed method and apparatus yields both the ambiguous solutions. The disclosed method may be followed up with iterative methods, using the solutions from the algebraic method as initial estimates of the device location for the iterative method. A different process can then select the correct solution. Thus, the algebraic method can be used to detect the existence of ambiguous solutions, and to find both solutions.
Abstract:
A system and method for estimating the quality and path loss associated with a communications channel on the basis of the power of a pilot signal received by a communications receiver. The communications receiver measures a received signal power, and also makes a relative pilot strength measurement of a received pilot signal. The power of the pilot signal is then computed using the received signal power and the relative pilot strength measurement. An indication of channel quality based on the pilot signal power may be provided to a user of the communications receiver. Path loss of a communication channel between a base station and a remote site station is also estimated. The base station also transmits an indication of the power at which the pilot signal was transmitted. An estimate of the path loss is then made by determining the difference between the indicated power of the transmitted pilot signal and the received pilot signal power.
Abstract:
A novel power conservation scheme is provided for conserving power in client terminals by using a proxy server. The client terminal, having a low-power communication interface and a high-power communication interface, may power down its high-power communication interface, to conserve power. Prior to shutting off its high-power communication interface, the client terminal may assign a host terminal to act as a proxy for the client terminal. The host terminal monitors the paging channels for the client terminal via a high-power communication interface. If the host terminal detects a paging message for the client terminal, it forwards at least a portion of the paging message to the client terminal via a low-power communication interface. Upon receipt of the paging message from the host terminal via its low-power communication interface, the client terminal may power up its high-power communication interface and directly respond to an access terminal that initiated the paging message.
Abstract:
The described apparatus and methods may include a controller configured to determine capabilities of at least one remote access terminal, and delegate at least one task to the at least one remote access terminal based on the capabilities.
Abstract:
Various features are provided to improve communication performance and power conservation in a client terminal by relying on the assistance of a proxy device. For instance, rather than reporting channel measurements via a primary communication channel to a network, the client terminal may be adapted to perform (a) channel measurement feedback using out-of-band signaling via the proxy device and/or (b) active synchronization with assistance of a proxy device. In this manner, the client terminal may be able to disable or reduce power consumption over a primary communication interface for the primary communication channel while utilizing a secondary communication interface to communicate with the proxy device.
Abstract:
A novel power conservation scheme is provided for conserving power in a wireless client terminal with an established communication session. While in a connected mode, the client terminal may receive data for the communication session via a data channel from an access point. During periods of inactivity over the data channel, the client terminal may switch to a lowered power mode, where the client terminal discontinuously monitors a control channel and does not monitor the data channel. The access point is informed of the operating mode of the client terminal. If a data resume indicator is received over the control channel, the client terminal switches back to the connected mode and resumes the communication session by receiving additional data over the data channel.
Abstract:
A method for concurrent bandwidth aggregation (COBA) for a client via multiple wireless networks includes requesting a packet data session for a first path on a first wireless network using a first modem of the multi-modem UE via a packet core network of the first wireless network. The method further includes requesting a packet data session for a second path on a second wireless network via the packet core network of the first wireless network using a second modem of the multi-modem UE. The method also includes receiving packet data over at least the second path on the second wireless network via the packet core network of the first wireless network.
Abstract:
Systems, methods, devices, and computer program products are described for discontinuous transmissions in a wireless communications system. In one example, a femtocell uses out-of-band (OOB) signals to detect the presence of user equipment (UEs) in a femtocell coverage area. In response to the detection, the femtocell may transmit in-band signals to facilitate communication with and registration of the detected UE. The femtocell may then perform discontinuous in-band transmissions to the registered UE.
Abstract:
A method of facilitating communication in a wireless ad-hoc network comprises: generating, at a node in the wireless ad-hoc network, target availability information with regard to one or more transmission slots, the target availability information indicating whether the node is permitted to receive a transmission during each transmission slot; generating, at the node, owner availability information with regard to one or more transmission slots, the owner availability information indicating whether the node is permitted to transmit during each transmission slot; and broadcasting, from the node, the target availability information and the owner availability information to separately indicate availability as either an owner or a target for one or more transmission slots.
