Abstract: Various techniques are provided in relation to flocculation and/or dewatering of thick fine tailings, with shear conditioning of flocculated tailings material in accordance with a pre-determined shearing parameter, such as the Camp Number. One example method of treating thick fine tailings including dispersing a flocculant into the thick fine tailings to form a flocculating mixture; shearing the flocculating mixture to increase yield stress and produce a flocculated mixture; shear conditioning the flocculated mixture to decrease the yield stress and break down flocs, the shear conditioning being performed in accordance with the pre-determined shearing parameter to produce conditioned flocculated material within a water release zone where release water separates from the conditioned flocculated material. The conditioned flocculated material can then be subjected to dewatering, for example by depositing, thickening or filtering. The design, construction and/or operation of a flocculation pipeline assembly can be facilitated.

Abstract: A method for controlling insect pests on a plant is provided. The method includes applying to the plant and/or to the insect pests a combination comprising: a nitrogen-bearing macrocyclic compound which is a photosensitizer that generates reactive oxygen species in the presence of light, the photosensitizer being selected from the group consisting of a porphyrin, a reduced porphyrin and a mixture thereof; and a chelating agent which is an aminopolycarboxylic acid compound or an agriculturally acceptable salt thereof; and exposing the plant to light in the presence of the insect pests to activate the nitrogen-bearing macrocyclic compound and generate reactive oxygen species.

Abstract: Provided herein is a liner that can be loosely inserted in process pipe to form a lined pipe and to decrease the rate of heat transfer between process fluids flowing through the liner and the process pipe. The liner provided herein can reduce applied thermal loading on the outer pipe resulting from, for example, turbulent mixing between fluids having different temperatures (with or without stratification), circumferential thermal gradients, and/or longitudinal thermal gradients. An annulus between the process pipe and liner can be at least partially filled by process fluids, thereby creating a thermal buffer to further decrease the rate of heat transfer between the fluids and the process pipe.

Abstract: Implementations of the present disclosure relate to an apparatus and a method for reducing a selenium-content of a fluid-input stream. The present disclosure includes components and steps for performing chemical modifications of a fluid-input stream and further components and steps for performing physical modifications of a chemically-manipulated fluid stream. When the fluid-input stream has a selenium content the chemical modification of the fluid-input stream drives at least a portion of the selenium content into a selenium-containing solids phase. The chemical modifications include at least oxidation, coagulation, chelation and flocculation. The present disclosure also includes components and steps for performing physical modifications that separate and remove some or all of the selenium-containing solids phase from the liquid phase, which reduces the selenium content of the liquid phase.

Abstract: A Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) method for recovering hydrocarbons from a reservoir can include generating steam and CO2 from feedwater, fuel and oxygen; transferring a steam-CO2 mixture comprising at least a portion of the steam and at least a portion of the CO2, to a proximate SAGD injection well; injecting the steam-CO2 mixture into the SAGD injection well; obtaining produced fluids from a SAGD production well underlying the SAGD injection well; transferring the produced fluids for separation proximate to the SAGD production well; separating the produced fluids into a produced gas and a produced emulsion; transferring the produced emulsion for separation proximate to the SAGD production well; separating the produced emulsion to obtain a produced hydrocarbon-containing component and produced water; supplying at least a portion of the produced water as at least part of the feedwater; and supplying the produced hydrocarbon-containing component to a central processing facility.
