A process for the treatment of thick fine tailings that include constituents of concern (CoCs) and suspended solids is provided. The process includes subjecting the thick fine tailings to treatments including chemical immobilization of the CoCs, polymer flocculation of the suspended solids, and dewatering. The chemical immobilization can include the addition of compounds enabling the insolubilization of the CoCs. Subjecting the thick fine tailings to chemical immobilization and polymer flocculation can facilitate production of a reclamation-ready material, which can enable disposing of the material as part of a permanent aquatic storage structure (PASS).

A process for making ink which begins with a leach liquor of Al.sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.3 +K.sub.2 SO.sub.4 +Fe.sub.2 SO.sub.4 and other sulfates that are introduced to a surface-cooled crystallizer that drops the Al.sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.3 +18H.sub.2 O which is removed from the leach liquor. The leach liquor is then supplied with a mixture which includes K.sub.2 SO.sub.4 into a simple crystallization and evaporation unit to drop Al.sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.3 +K.sub.2 SO.sub.4 +24H.sub.2 O. A pressure of 250 PSI and a temperature of 200.degree. C. are then applied in a discrete continuous process that yield a basic sodium or sodium/potassium aluminum sulfate and excess sodium sulfate or sodium/potassium. The excess sodium sulfate or sodium/potassium sulfate is returned to the simple crystallization and evaporation unit. The basic potassium aluminum sulfate (BKAS) and/or basic sodium aluminum sulfate (BNaAS) Na.sub.2 SO.sub.4, 3Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 4SO.sub.3, 9H.sub.2 O is used as a filler in the making of ink.

In the method, a material selected from the group consisting of sodium sulfate, sodium bisulfate, ammonium sulfate, ammonium bisulfate, potassium sulfate and potassium bisulfate is provided and reacted with a source of aluminum hydroxide in a liquid. The reaction is carried out under acidic conditions, and alunite is recovered after separating, washing and drying.

There is described a process for preparing large crystals of basic aluminum nitrate (BAN) from a nitric acid feed solution containing Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 values comprising the steps of:(1) evaporating water and nitric acid from the solution in a single step evaporation performed at a temperature of between about 270.degree. and about 450.degree. F. and at a pressure of between about atmospheric and about 60 psig to produce an evaporated liquor comprising at least about 16% alumina by weight;(2) holding the evaporated liquor in a quiescent state for a period of between about 20 minutes and about two hours within the temperature range of about 270.degree. F. to about 340.degree.
