摘要: A method and associated apparatus in which decorative ribbons of varying thickness, width, and material can be automatically curled. The apparatus serves to impart a tendency to curl the strand in a helical formation by drawing the ribbon in a helical path around a curling tube. The tube is divided into two parts, so that the first part heats the ribbon while in a helical configuration and the second part cools the ribbon while still in the helical configuration, thereby setting into the ribbon material a tendency to curl. The helical path on the tube is defined between convolutions of a helically-wound fin on the exterior of the tube. The tube is hollow and has apertures opening into the helical path, so that temperature-controlled air may be blown into the two parts of the path through the hollow interior of the tube.

摘要: Axially extending structures having internal forces directed radially outward therefrom may be reinforced by installing bands around the structures. The bands consist of a plurality of elastic convolutions of a composite material which assume a coiled configuration in a relaxed condition. The composite material includes a multiplicity of continuous, high tensile strength filaments encapsulated in a resin matrix and extending codirectionally with one another through the resin matrix. The band is installed around the structure by deflecting portions of the band to an uncoiled configuration and then wrapping these portions of the band around the structure. Adhesive may be used to secure the band tightly around the structure. Particularly useful applications for the composite bands are for reinforcing gas and liquid transmission pipelines and concrete bridge support columns.

摘要: Spiral bands having a plurality of convolutions of a high tensile strength composite material are formed by feeding a plurality of continuous high tensile strength fibers through an uncured resin to form a web, depositing the web on a release web having at least one substantially planar surface to form a laminate, winding the laminate around the mandrel to form a plurality of overlapping convolutions, curing the resin in the composite web to set the convolutions in a spiral configuration, and then removing the release web from the composite web. The convolutions of the spiral bands in accordance with this process have substantially planar surfaces and an elastic memory. These bands can be used to reinforce axially extending structures having internal forces directed radially outward therefrom by wrapping the band around the structure with a layer of adhesive applied to hold the convolutions in place.

摘要: An article having a main sheath portion formed of a flexible and/or elastic material closed at a distal end thereof and open at a proximal end thereof, with a first flange element formed of a flexible and elastic material, and having an aperture formed or pressure-formable therein, secured to the open proximal end of the sheath. In a single flange embodiment, the main sheath portion may be provided in a center-compacted configuration, for bidirectional application of the sheath. In a multi-flange embodiment, a second flange element is secured at an outer portion thereof to the first flange element and has an aperture formed or pressure-formable therein, in substantial alignment with the aperture of the first flange element, whereby the sheath is extended or extensible from a compacted state through the aperture in either the first or the second flange element. In a specific embodiment, the article comprises a condom which may be donned in either of two directions. Such bidirectionally donnable condom article is characterized by ease of use and improved safety and reliability, as compared to prior art condoms.

摘要: Tubular sleeves formed from elongated flat sheets, particularly braided sheets are disclosed. Sheet material comprised of interlaced monofilaments is cold worked by the process of drawing the interlaced monofilaments over a forming edge with sufficient force and in a direction causing permanent elongation of the molecules of material on one side of the interlaced monofilaments. The cold worked monofilaments impart a permanent bias to the sheet causing it to curl about its longitudinal axis. Sleeves so formed may be slipped over or wrapped around bundles of wires or other elongated substrates, particularly those which include terminals, plugs and connectors of irregular dimension.

摘要: A contactless method for knurling thermoplastic film to improve its winding characteristics is disclosed. A preferred embodiment employs an ink jet printer to intermittently deposit ink upon at least one margin of the moving film surface. A second preferred embodiment employs a laser to intermittently modify at least one margin of the moving film surface. The invention eliminates the problem of stress gradient during web transport prior to winding which is inherent in contact knurling and particularly troublesome in the manufacture of high modulus, relatively thin thermoplastic films.

摘要: In a method and an arrangement for winding and forming helixes of elastic synthetic plastic and metal wire the wire is supplied from a wire supply device, windings are then wound from the wire so as to form straight winding legs connected by head curves, the windings are then separated to provide distances therebetween, the separated windings are widened in correspondence with the distances between them produced during the separation and the finished helixes are supplied to a helix supply device.
