Abstract: Apparatus, systems, and methods may operate to construct a memory barrier to protect a thread-specific use counter by serializing parallel instruction execution. If a reader thread is new and a writer thread is not waiting to access data to be read by the reader thread, the thread-specific use counter is created and associated with a read data structure and a write data structure. The thread-specific use counter may be incremented if a writer thread is not waiting. If the writer thread is waiting to access the data after the thread-specific use counter is created, then the thread-specific use counter is decremented without accessing the data by the reader thread. Otherwise, the data is accessed by the reader thread and then the thread-specific use counter is decremented. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for over the air provisioning of soft cards on devices with wireless communications capabilities are disclosed. According to one method, a soft card provisioning application is instantiated on a device with wireless communications capabilities. A card number for a soft card desired to be provisioned on the device is obtained from a user of the device. The card number is communicated to a provisioning configuration server over an air interface. Card-issuer-specific challenges corresponding to the card number and a provisioning issuer server network address are obtained from the provisioning configuration server. The challenges are presented to the user, and the user's responses to the challenges are received. A connection is made to the provisioning issuer server corresponding to the network address. The challenge responses are communicated to the provisioning issuer server. Soft card personalization data for activating the soft card is received from the provisioning issuer server. The soft card is provisioned for use on the device based on the personalization data.

Abstract: A method for identifying modes and transitions during plant operation, wherein measured values of process variables are used to evaluate a current state of the process and its sections and subsections. An identified state of the plant is signaled and the plant is monitored for normal execution of any transition, identifying a current task being performed in the process and sending a message to different sections of the plant. Results are displayed on a visual display device and can be sent to other plant computer programs for guidance during the transition. A permanent chronological record of the sequence of events—modes and transitions—of the plant and sections and subsections including the pertinent plant conditions and information is generated for subsequent review and analysis.

Abstract: An optimal vibration mount for a disc drive is designed by computing external, Ξ, and internal, Θ, disturbance models for the disc drive and defining an inertia matrix, M, for the disc drive. A state estimator, such as a Kalman filter, is defined based on the inertia matrix and external and internal disturbance models, and a covariance matrix, Σ, is derived based on the filter algebraic Riccati equation. The state estimator gain, H, is calculated from Σ(I 0)′Θ−1, and the optimal mount damping, B. and stiffness, K, parameters are derived from the state estimator gain and inertia matrix, H = ( M - 1 B M - 1 K ) .

Abstract: A system for sorting randomly positioned, irregularly shaped scrap metal particles on a moving conveyor employs laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and includes an image detector for locating the particles as they path through a predefined viewing area, a position detector for detecting movement of the conveyor, a laser system for providing laser pulses, a scanner assembly for directing the pulses to selected locations within a target area, a light collector, a light distribution and spectral analyzer for isolating and measuring at least one selected band from the collected light, a separator, and suitable logic for identifying the particles, monitoring their position, monitoring the output of the laser and, operating the scanner assembly to direct the pulses to the identified particle. The spectral data is then analyzed, each particle is categorized, and thereafter sorted.
