Abstract:
An apodized acousto-optic polarization converter in which two acoustic waveguides are (14, 20) are formed in a substrate and are separated by a small gap (18) such that the two acoustic waveguides act as a directional coupler in which acoustic power is transferred back and forth. An interdigitated transducer (12) launches a surface acoustic wave in the first acoustic waveguide, and an optical waveguide is formed in the middle of the second waveguide. An acoustic absorber (26) is formed over both acoustic waveguides at a distance from the transducer such that the acoustic wave is transferred from the first to the second waveguide and back again. Thereby, the optical signal in the optical waveguide is exposed to an acoustic power density that slowly increases to a maximum and then decreases with the result that the side lobes of the frequency spectrum for the converted signal are greatly reduced. The converter may be used as an electrically tunable optical filter using orthogonal input and output polarizers (30, 32).
Abstract:
A water reaction synthesis with polyoxyethylene diol, diisocyanate and dibutyltin bis lauryl mercaptide produces a high molecular weight thermoplastic polyurethane-urea linear polymer with surface resistivity 10.sup.11 -10.sup.6 ohm/sq. Thermoplastic and/or elastomeric antistatic compositions containing other melt processable polymers and/or filler, and the polymer exhibit permanent protection. Antistatic protection can be increased when the polymer complexes with a metal salt such as lithium chloride, or lithium acetate. The composition is useful in the manufacture of antistatic floor coverings and textile texturing and drafting elements such as cots and aprons.
Abstract:
An adjustable power converter which allows the output voltage of the power converter to be controlled linearly by a programming resistor or a programming voltage is provided. The adjustable power converter includes a linear programming circuit which generates a current as a linear function of the programming voltage or the resistance of the programming resistor. The current is connected to the feedback loop of a conventional power converter such that the output voltage of the power converter is a linear function of the current. As a result, the output voltage of the power converter can be linearly adjusted by adjusting the programming voltage or the programming resistor.

A hand held, dip-tube style liquid spray dispenser comprising a container having an inclined bottom, sidewalls extending upwardly from the bottom, and an upper end, a dispensing device positioned adjacent this upper end for dispensing a liquid held in the container and communicated upward to the dispensing device, and a tube for communicating liquid upward from a lower end of the tube to the dispensing device. The tube being of a sufficient length such that the lower end of the tube is urged toward the lowermost portion of the bottom when the container is oriented as in use.
Abstract:
A boost convertor power supply comprising an electronic switch controlling current through a boost inductance, a rectifier for charging a capacitor which accumulates the resulting boost charge from the boost inductance, and circuitry for repeatedly switching the electronic switch. A pulse width modulation circuit varies the relative on/off period of each cycle of switching to cause the peck switch current to follow a variable amplitude wave of shape corresponding to the input voltage applied to the boost converter and amplitude controlled by an error amplifier and multiplier thereby regulating the output voltage. A ramp signal generator provides for pulse width stability. An error correction circuit corrects for the difference between average current in the boost inductor and peak switch current to modify the pulse width modulation circuit to reduce distortion of the line current waveform.
Abstract:
A system for balancing rotating members comprising a laser head which emits a laser shot in response to a laser control signal to remove material from the rotating member. The laser control signal is produced by a computer which is responsive to a plurality of signals representing vibration of the rotating member and influence coefficients from a memory device. The computer applies less than a calculated number of laser shots at each targeted location of the rotating member and then applies this reduced number sequentially to all targeted locations while calculating whether the vibration signals fall below targeted levels and, if so, discontinuing removal of material by the laser.

Abstract:
A single probe voltmeter for determining the voltage potential of high voltage transmission lines is disclosed. The voltmeter includes a capacitor having a spherical first plate connected to the transmission line through a rectifier network. The second plate of the capacitor is formed by the physical surroundings. An ammeter is connected across the rectifier network to provide an indication of the charging current for the spherical capacitor, which charging current is essentially a function of the transmission line voltage such that the ammeter provides an indication of the voltage potential on the transmission line.
Abstract:
A phototherapy device includes a high intensity light source secured to a leaky light conducting fiber to leak light along the length of the fiber. The light fiber is illuminated at either or both ends by the light source and the light fiber is generally oriented in a 3-D spiral pattern to form a dome of light to provide phototherapy to an area of a patient's scalp to be treated. A generally hemispherical shell is formed of a first or inner translucent diffuser layer secured to a second or outer reflective layer, the first and second layers encapsulating the 3-D non-overlapping spiral pattern light fiber. A control system is also provided to turn off the light source when a break or discontinuity occurs in the fiber.
