Abstract: A fuel temperature control system and a method of controlling a fuel temperature for a turbine engine including supplying an aviation fuel to a fuel nozzle fluidly coupled to a combustion chamber. A fuel temperature sensor for determining at least one input parameter to define an inlet fuel temperature of the aviation fuel in the fuel nozzle. A controller for receiving the at least one input parameter and for calculating a calculated flow number in the fuel nozzle. The controller capable of comparing the calculated flow number and a reference flow number associated with a threshold during a steady state condition to determine if the aviation fuel is boiling inside the fuel nozzle.

Abstract: A component and a system for mitigating coke formation during delivery of a hydrocarbon fluid. The component includes a contact surface configured to be in contact with the hydrocarbon fluid. Tuning the zeta potential of the contact surface allows selective attraction and/or repulsion of coke-catalyzing materials, metal ions, heteroatomic hydrocarbons, and/or coke precursors present in the hydrocarbon fluid. A method of mitigating coke formation during delivery of a hydrocarbon fluid includes tuning a zeta potential of the contact surface of the component and injecting or circulating the hydrocarbon fluid through the system such that the contact surface selectively attracts and/or repels coke-catalyzing materials, metal ions, heteroatomic hydrocarbons, and/or coke precursors present in the hydrocarbon fluid.

Abstract: A mixer assembly for a gas turbine engine. The mixer assembly includes a housing and a fuel injection port. The housing has a passage formed therein, and the housing includes a passage wall facing the passage. The fuel injection port is fluidly connected to a fuel source and is configured to inject a hydrocarbon fuel into the passage. At least a portion of the passage wall is a coated passage wall. The coated passage wall is (i) coated with a layer of a catalytic metal and (ii) located downstream of the fuel injection port.

Abstract: A swirler assembly includes a swirler having primary swirler with a primary swirler venturi, a swirler ferrule plate connected to the primary swirler, and a fuel nozzle disposed in the swirler ferrule plate. The swirler ferrule plate has an aft wall, an annular conical wall, and an annular cavity wall that together form an annular cavity. The annular cavity includes a plurality of inlet orifices, and at least one outlet orifice. A flow of oxidizer through the plurality of inlet orifices into the annular cavity incurs a first pressure drop from a first pressure of a pressure plenum to a second pressure lower than the first pressure, and a flow of the oxidizer from the annular cavity through the at least one outlet orifice into the primary swirler venturi incurs a second pressure drop from the second pressure to a third pressure lower than the second pressure.

Abstract: A combustor for a gas turbine includes a combustor liner that has an outer liner and an inner liner. At least one of the outer liner and the inner liner includes (a) an upstream liner section fixedly connected in the combustor, (b) a downstream liner section fixedly connected in the combustor, and (c) a dilution liner section including a movable portion including at least a part of the dilution liner section and having at least one dilution opening therethrough. The movable portion is arranged to translate in an upstream direction and in a downstream direction. At least one actuator is connected to the movable portion of the dilution liner section and controls translational movement of the movable portion in the upstream direction and the downstream direction to adjust a volume of a primary combustion zone within the combustor.

Abstract: An engine can utilize a combustor to combust fuel to drive the engine. A fuel nozzle assembly can supply fuel to the combustor for combustion or ignition of the fuel. The fuel nozzle assembly can include a swirler and a fuel nozzle to supply a mixture of fuel and air for combustion, which can supply a primary fuel supply and a secondary fuel supply. Increasing efficiency and reducing emission require the use of alternative fuels, which combust at higher temperatures or burn at faster burn speeds than traditional fuels, requiring improved fuel introduction without the occurrence of flame holding or flashback.

Abstract: A method of operating a combustor of a gas turbine, the combustor including a combustor liner that defines a total combustion chamber volume, and has a primary combustion zone defining a primary volume. The combustor liner includes a movable portion that is arranged to be actuated to adjust a percentage of the primary volume with respect to the total combustion chamber volume. The method includes, at a first operating state of the gas turbine, adjusting a size of the primary volume to a first percentage of the total combustion chamber volume by actuating the movable portion to adjust the size of the primary volume, and at a second operating state of the gas turbine different from the first operating state, adjusting the size of the primary volume to a second percentage of the total combustion chamber volume by actuating the movable portion to adjust the size of the primary volume.
