摘要: An optical module includes an emitter-side mounting substrate, a receiver-side mounting substrate and an external waveguide substrate. The mounting substrate is provided with a waveguide having a core and a pair of fitting recesses. The external waveguide substrate is provided with an external waveguide having a core, a pair of fitting tabs and a lap joint portion. As the fitting tabs are fitted into the respective fitting recesses, the mounting substrate) and the external waveguide substrate are joined together, the two cores are aligned with each other, and the lap joint portion is positioned to overlap the mounting substrate.

摘要: When a semiconductor laser is arranged outside a slider and a light is to be guided to the slider through a waveguide, the following problems will be solved: the stability of the flying slider is deteriorated due to a stress from the waveguide; and when an actuator is arranged near the flying slider, the motions of the slider are hindered by the waveguide. A waveguide for guiding a light to a light irradiating unit inside a slider, which floats over a medium and has the light irradiating unit for irradiating a light to the medium; and a waveguide for propagating a light from the light source to the waveguide inside the slider, are included. The two waveguides are not in contact with each other, and a relative portion between the two waveguides is movable.

摘要: In a thermally assisted recording head using a conductive scatterer as an optical near-field transducer, a propagation loss in a waveguide for guiding light to the scatterer is reduced. An optical near-field is generated by using the conductive scatterer having a width that gradually becomes smaller toward a vertex at which the optical near-field is generated. At the same time, a height of the conductive scatterer for generating the optical near-field is made substantially equal to a height of a main pole or longer than the height of the main pole.

摘要: A determination oxygen storage amount used to determine whether a catalyst is degraded is a value obtained by applying a correction amount for removing error caused by response delay time of an output signal of an oxygen sensor to an oxygen storage amount calculated every short time. The correction amount is a value that is calculated using slopes stored in memory, i.e., the slopes for the number of storage cycles (>the short time) corresponding to the response delay time, or the like, and becomes more accurate as a value corresponding to the error as the storage cycle becomes relatively shorter with respect to the response delay time and the number of the slopes stored in the memory increases. The necessary storage capacity of the memory is inhibited from increasing excessively even if the number of the slopes stored in the memory is large.

摘要: The present invention suppresses temperature rise of an optical near-field generator while increasing optical near-field intensity in a thermally assisted magnetic recording head using a conductive scatterer as the optical near-field generator. The present invention uses a conductive scatterer having a cross-sectional shape in which its width is gradually reduced toward an apex where an optical near-field is generated, and also has a shape in which its width is reduced gradually or in a stepwise fashion toward the apex where the optical near-field is generated in a traveling direction of incident light.

摘要: The optimum head-field intensity for saturation recording is assumed to be 560×103 A/m or more. Under a condition where the recording track width of an information recording medium is equal to or less than 60 nm, the optimum head-field intensity Y satisfies the following inequalities (1) and (2): Y≧(X2−119×X+4135)×1000  (1) Y≦(X2−119×X+const)×1000  (2) where X denotes the nondimensional value of the recording track width divided by 10−9 m, and Y denotes a magnetic field (expressed in units of A/m) which a magnetic pole for head-field application applies to the center of the information recording medium in the direction of the thickness thereof. Note that const=−0.8×v2+33.7×v+4250 if the relative velocity v between the head and the medium at the position of the head is less than 20 m/sec, or const=4600 if the velocity v is equal to or more than 20 m/sec.
