摘要: A near-field light generating method for irradiating light from a light source to a metal film having a fine opening that has a size of not more than a wavelength of the light emitted from the light source, and forming a fine light spot adjacent to the fine opening on a light outgoing side of the fine opening. The method includes providing the metal film with a rectangular fine opening whose length to width ratio is between 1.1 times and 2 times that of a standard square opening, obtained by increasing the length of the standard square opening, and irradiating the metal film with light from the light source to form the fine light spot, which has a length and a width that are substantially equal to those of the standard square opening, and where the fine light spot has a light intensity, which is not less than two times that of the standard square opening. This method is applicable in a corresponding near-field optical head, which can be included either in an optical microscope to observe a sample surface or in an apparatus for recording and reproducing with respect to a recording medium.

摘要: An information recording and reproducing apparatus including a recording medium that includes at least a substrate, a reflection layer disposed on the substrate, and a recording layer disposed so as to interpose the reflection layer between the substrate and the recording layer, and a near-field optical head, disposed close to the recording medium, for irradiating the recording medium with near-field light to effect recording and reproduction of information. The near-field optical head includes a light-blocking metal film which includes a dielectric base material provided with a small opening and which is disposed opposite to the reflection layer disposed on the substrate, so that the light-blocking metal film and the reflection layer constitute an optical resonator to increase intensity of the near-field light. The optical resonator satisfies the following resonance condition: 4πL/λ+φ1+φ2=2mπ, wherein L represents an optical path between a bottom surface, of the near-field optical head, at which the light-blocking metal film is disposed; λ represents a wavelength in a vacuum of a light source used in the near-field optical head; φ1 represents a phase shift due to reflection by the light-blocking metal film; φ2 represents a phase shift due to reflection by the reflection layer; and m represents a positive integer.

摘要: An IP telephone determines, in making a telephone call, whether a called party's telephone is an IP telephone or not (S17). If determination result is affirmative, a flag 2 is turned on (S19). Then, a marker indicating that the called party is an IP telephone is added to telephone control information for the called party registered in a telephone directory within a memory (S59, S65). This makes it possible to know, in making a telephone call to the called party from next time onward, whether the called party's telephone is an IP telephone or not prior to establishment of connection with the called party, from the presence or absence of the marker in the telephone directory.

摘要: In a chemical sensing apparatus utilizing a surface plasmon resonance in a small aperture formed in a metal thin film or on a surface of a metal fine particle, a capturing substance is disposed in the small aperture or on the surface of the metal fine particle for capturing a target substance. A marker substance, having a size comparable to that of the small aperture or the metal fine particle is combined with the target substance. As a result, a spectral change is increased in the transmitted light or the scattered light, induced by a surface plasmon resonance and resulting from the capture of the target substance.

摘要: An ultrasonic motor piezoelectric actuator element uses a primary longitudinal mode and a secondary bending mode and includes a stacked piezoelectric element in which piezoelectric layers and electrode layers are stacked alternately in such a manner that the electrode layers divide the piezoelectric layers into two approximately equal portions. A piezoelectric inactive region is formed from the surface portion to the center portion in the thickness direction of the stacked piezoelectric element. The migration resistance of the piezoelectric actuator element is improved while suppressing a decrease in displacement so that a short circuit can be prevented and portions generating heat during alternating polarization can be dispersed, whereby reliability is increased. Moreover, the amount of electrode material used can be reduced, whereby cost can be reduced.
