    Abstract: Patterned and plasma-treated coatings for surfaces of electronic devices are disclosed. The patterned and plasma-treated coatings may include a linear fluorinated oligomer or linear fluorinated polymer and may be transparent. Regions of a patterned coating may be micro-sized. The pattern defined by the coating may not be visually discernable, but may affect the frictional properties of the coating.

    Abstract: An electronic device may include electrical components and other components mounted within an interior of a housing. The device may have a display on a front face of the device and may have a glass layer that forms part of the housing on a rear face of the device. The glass layer may be provided with regions having different appearances. The regions may be textured, may have coatings such as thin-film interference filter coatings formed from stacks of dielectric material having alternating indices of refraction, may have metal coating layers, and/or may have ink coating layers. Textured surfaces may be formed on thin glass layers and polymer films that are coupled to the glass layer. A glass layer may be formed from a pair of coupled glass layers. The coupled layers may have one or more recesses or other structures to visually distinguish different regions of the glass layer.

    Abstract: An electronic device has an electrically adjustable optical layer. Displays and other optical components may be supported by a housing structure. The housing structure may form a handheld device housing, a head-mounted housing, or other housing for the electronic device. Control circuitry in the electronic device may adjust the electrically adjustable optical layer. The control circuitry may reduce light transmission for the electrically adjustable optical layer to hide the optical components, may increase light transmission to reveal the optical components while the optical components are being used to receive light or to output light, and may otherwise adjust the electrically adjustable optical layer to exhibit a desired set of optical characteristics depending on the mode of operation of the electronic device.

    Abstract: A window or other component may have glass layers and an interposed polymer layer in which a textured light-scattering layer with a diffuse reflectivity is embedded. The textured light-scattering layer may have a textured polymer carrier film coated with a partially reflective layer such as a metal layer. The polymer carrier film may be textured to cause gaps to form within the partially reflective layer. The gaps may be patterned to form ohmic heating current paths or other signal paths through the partially reflective layer. The partially reflective layer may also serve as an electrode in a light modulator such as a liquid crystal light modulator or other light modulator. Images may be projected onto the textured light-scattering layer. The light-scattering layer may also help extract light from a light guiding layer adjacent to the partially reflective layer.

    Abstract: A cover glass assembly comprises a sheet having a first surface and a second surface below the first surface. The second surface comprises a textured portion. The cover glass assembly also includes a pigment layer below the textured portion, and a mirror layer below the pigment layer. The textured portion diffusely reflects a first portion of light that enters the cover glass assembly through the first surface. The pigment layer diffusely reflects a second portion of the light. The mirror layer reflects, onto the pigment layer, a third portion of the light. The cover glass assembly provides a high-luminance surface. A method of forming the cover glass assembly is also disclosed.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a housing, electrical components mounted in the housing, and optical components. A display may be mounted to the housing and may have an array of pixels overlapped by a transparent member serving as a display cover layer. Transparent members in openings in the housing may form optical component widows. A housing member or a transparent member serving as a display cover layer or optical component window may be provided with a protective coating. The protective coating may be formed on an outer surface of the housing member or transparent member. The protective coating may have a polymer binder with embedded particles. The embedded particles may be hard particles that provide the protective coating with enhanced scratch resistance. The protective coating may help enhance fracture resistance in a display cover layer or other coated member.

    Abstract: A system for heat treating sapphire components to increase strength while maintaining the optical finish and/or transparency of the component. The system may include a fixture positioned in a furnace and configured to suspend an array or group of sapphire components. The fixture may include notches or other features to assist in locating and positioning the sapphire components. Shield elements or enclosures may also be interspersed with the sapphire components and may help produce a more uniform heat distribution and protect the sapphire components from emissions or deposits. Some aspects are directed to a sleeve tool and fixture jig that can be used to assemble the sapphire components onto the fixture in a way that reduces the risk of marring or otherwise damaging the sapphire components.
