Abstract: The invention is generally directed to a method for selecting a font that uses a mark-up language document to group together multiple pre-existing fonts into a single font family or “virtual font.” The mark-up language document includes rules regarding the conditions under which individual fonts within the family are to be used. This permits, for example, a font developer to create, in an efficient manner, an international font using several preexisting fonts.

Abstract: A personal defense device is provided that includes a shield and an electric shock device. The shield is configured to protect a user and circuitry from physical attack. The personal defense device is configured to be worn by a user such that it is difficult or impossible for an attacker to remove the personal defense device during an attack. In one embodiment, the personal defense device includes a gauntlet-style glove attached to the shield and electric shock device so as to provide protection for a user's forearm. The electric shock device is configured to deliver less-lethal electrical shocks and/or sparks to startle, disarm, and repel an aggressor.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for supporting a movable member (10) with respect to a fixed member (40) is provided. The movable member (10) includes a magnetically permeable portion (81) contained therein and magnetic element (50) fixedly attached thereto and movable therewith. The movable member (10) is supported for rotation with respect to the fixed member (40) by an outer bearing surface (11) of the movable member and an inner bearing surface (20) of the fixed member (40). The fixed member (40) provides access to the movable member (10) from two sides thereof. A magnetically permeable stator element (70) is fixedly attached to the fixed member (40) and positioned within a magnetic flux field of the magnetic element (50) such that an air gap (73) is formed between the magnetic element (50) and the stator element (70). Accordingly a magnetic traction force acts across the air gap (73) for urging the moveable member (10) toward the fixed member (40) thereby clamping the movable element in a fixed orientation with respect to the movable element. The stator element (70) includes stator current coils (60) wound onto portions of the stator element for inducing electromagnetic forces within the stator element in response to a current passing through the coils. The electromagnetic force acts on the magnetic element (50) to move the movable member (10) in a controllable manner.

Abstract: A high precision torque motor, including a partial rotation drive suitable for use in a galvanometer scanner, where the rotor is supported within the stator and housing assembly on all ceramic ball bearings, including inner and outer races and bearing balls. The ceramic ball bearing assemblies and all structural support elements have substantially equal coefficients of expansion through the use of matched expansion, nickel-iron alloy for the rotor shaft, stator, housing and other structural components which contact, locate, and support the inner and outer bearing races. The cup can include a body member having an inside surface and outside surface, and a bottom panel member having a upper surface and a bottom surface. Abstract: The invention is an improved nursing bottle, providing a new valve within its bottom structure. A flexible disk is disposed within the bottom end cap of the nursing bottle, clamped at its periphery to the periphery of the base when the bottle is assembled. The disk has a ring of slits near its periphery which are closed when pressure inside the bottle equals ambient pressure. The slits are further sealed by contact with the base. Holes, which are sealed closed by contact with the disk, are provided in the base within a central portion which does not contact the slits in the disk. When pressure within the bottle drops, the disk bows upwardly in its center, opening the valve and allowing air to enter the bottle. When pressure within the bottle increases, the valve again closes.
