An abrasive article is presented which includes a backing having a front and back surface, and an abrasive coating bonded to the front surface of the backing. The abrasive coating comprises a homogeneous mixture of a plurality of abrasive particles, a binder and a grinding aid. The binder serves to bond the abrasive coating to the backing and the grinding aid comprises at least 1% by weight of the abrasive coating, but not more than 50% by weight. It is preferred that the abrasive coating consists essentially of a plurality of precisely shaped abrasive composites. Methods of making and using the abrasive articles are also presented.

An apparatus for planarizing semiconductor wafers in its preferred form includes a rotatable platen for polishing a surface of the semiconductor wafer and a motor for rotating the platen. A non-circular pad is mounted atop the platen to engage and polish the surface of the semiconductor wafer. A polishing head holds the surface of the semiconductor wafer in juxtaposition relative to the non-circular pad. A polishing head displacement mechanism moves the polishing head and semiconductor wafer across and past a peripheral edge of the non-circular pad to effectuate a uniform polish of the semiconductor wafer surface. Also disclosed is a method for planarizing a semiconductor surface using a non-circular polishing pad.

Apparatus and method for the manufacture of improved abrasive tools and the like which includes apparatus and a method for the creation of a structurally viable matrix having a pattern of abrasive elements which can be shaped, cut and positioned for permanent disposition on a rigid tool body. The apparatus includes a transversely magnetized base surface with magnetic protrusions to provide a mosaic-like surface. A release layer is placed over the protrusions and magnetizable abrasive particles are diffused onto the surface of the release mechanism. The particles orient themselves magnetically to form generally conic stacks which having a stack axis and a distal working portion. The stacks define a working surface which is then coated with acrylic paint to provide structural integrity. Prior to solidification of the paint the cones may be shaped, for example, by passing a magnet near them. After the cones have been shaped and the paint dried, a braze paste is applied to encapsulate the cones and form a flexible support web between the cones. The entire matrix may then be removed from the base surface and cut and formed to any desired shape. The release mechanism may then be removed and the matrix secured to a rigid structure using an acrylic adhesive. At this point, the matrix and structure may be heated to braze temperature to form an assembly featuring a high-friction surface used as an abrasive tool.

An abrasive tape comprises a flexible substrate and an abrasive layer, which is overlaid on the flexible substrate and which is primarily constituted of abrasive grains and a binder. The abrasive grains are composed of first abrasive grains and second abrasive grains. The first abrasive grains and the second abrasive grains are constituted of at least one type of angular grains which are selected from the group consisting of Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3, SiC, and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and which are obtained from a pulverizing process. The mean grain diameter of the first abrasive grains falls within the range of 6 .mu.m to 9 .mu.m. The mean grain diameter of the second abrasive grains falls within the range of 4 .mu.m to 6 .mu.m. The binder is contained in a proportion falling within the range of 10% by weight to 30% by weight with respect to the abrasive grains. A 40% by weight to 65% by weight portion of the binder is constituted of a polyisocyanate.

C. into an aromatic polyamic acid, forming the resultant dope dispersion into a thin layer and solidifying the thin layer while imidizing the aromatic polyamic acid into a corresponding aromatic imide polymer.

A coated cutting tool comprises a substrate having an outer coating of refractory material with an interfacial layer intermediate the substrate and outer coating for enhancing the adherence of the layer of refractory material to the substrate. The interfacial layer is provided by reacting titanium halide with a layer of alpha-silicon nitride to form a smooth and uniform layer of titanium nitride. The cutting tool may also comprise the intermediate products of alpha-coated silicon nitride or the titanium nitride coated tool formed by reacting the alpha-silicon nitride coating.
