Abstract: The system disclosed is for controlling the iodine level in a water supply in a spacecraft. The system iodinates drinking water as necessary. It includes an iodine accumulator which stores crystalline iodine, an electro-chemical valve to control the input of iodine to the drinking water and an iodine dispenser. A pump dispenses fluid through the iodine dispenser and an iodine sensor to a potable water tank storage. The iodine sensor electronically detects the iodine level in the water, and through electronic means, produces a correction current control. The correction current control operates the electro-chemical iodine valve to release iodine from the iodine accumulator into the iodine dispenser.

Abstract: The apparatus comprises a turntable carrying, in a circular array centered on a central rotational axis of the turntable, a plurality of vials extending below the underside of the turntable. A stepper motor imparts stepwise rotational motion to the turntable so that during dwell periods of the turntable, specimens in the vials can be investigated optically.Air in a space below the turntable and bounded laterally and at the bottom by an enclosure is circulated by a rotating vane, and a thermistor, responsive to the temperature in the region of the vials, controls a heater in the space below the turntable so as to maintain the temperature of the vials substantially at a predetermined value.In order to dispense liquids into the vessels at predetermined temperatures, the apparatus additionally includes a liquid dispenser mounted adjacent the turntable and comprising a tubular body with an electric heating coil and a dispensing device which dispenses liquid from the outlet of the tubular body in predetermined quantities, the heating coil being supplied with the necessary quantity of power to maintain the temperature of the dispensed liquid substantially at a predetermined value.Preferably, the apparatus is used for analysing blood specimens.

Abstract: A liquid chemical storage and dispensing unit is disclosed in which a mobile cart supports upper and lower groups of pressure sealable storage tanks containing liquid chemicals. Conduits couple a pressure distributing gas manifold to the upper tanks. Tank pairs comprising one tank each of the upper and lower groups are serially coupled by conduits of equal effective internal dimension extending between an open end within a lower region of the upper tanks and inlet fittings on the lower tanks. An open end in the lower tanks communicates liquid chemical therein via conduits of equal effective internal dimension to a nozzle receiving liquid chemical collecting manifold. A plurality of tank pairs are thereby coupled in parallel between the gas manifold and the liquid chemical collecting manifold providing simultaneous emptying of the tank pairs at an enhanced potential liquid chemical flow rate. In operation, tanks are individually filled with liquid chemical and the cart is transported to a point of use. A gas pressure source coupled to the gas manifold forces liquid chemical through the upper tanks to the lower tanks and from the lower tanks to an outlet coupled to the liquid chemical collecting manifold. Thereafter the pressurized tanks successively feed chemical on demand to coupled sprayers until the last tank is empty.

Abstract: Apparatus for and method of feeding a solute into a stream of solvent at an accurately predetermined and variable rate. A solute such as an acid for treating water to prevent scale formation is disposed in a container in solid form. The interior of the container communicates with a supply of heated and deaerated distilland via a conduit blocked by a predetermined variable area microporous membrane. The heated and deaerated distilland is circulated in contact with one side of the membrane and diffuses therethrough whereby the solute dissolves therein to form a concentrated aqueous acid solution. The concentrated acid solution is permitted to diffuse back through the membrane and mix with the distilland to control the pH thereof. The solute concentration within the acid solution in the container is maintained generally constant and means are provided for indicating a change in solute concentration.
