Abstract: A valve opening and closing timing control apparatus includes: a driving side rotator disposed rotatably about a rotation axis and configured to rotate synchronously with a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine; a driven side rotator disposed rotatably about the rotation axis and configured to be rotatable relative to the driving side rotator and to rotate integrally with a valve opening and closing camshaft of the internal combustion engine; and a phase adjustment mechanism configured to set a relative rotation phase between the driving side rotator and the driven side rotator by a driving force of an electric actuator. The phase adjustment mechanism includes: an internally toothed ring gear; an inner gear; and a drive shaft, and the valve opening and closing timing control apparatus further includes: a biasing member; and a displacement regulation portion.

Abstract: A split ring planetary drive with at least one travel end stop received in at least one pocket of a first ring gear. The travel end stop is moveable between a first stop position in which as the planetary drive rotates in a direction the travel end stop engages the stop on the planet carrier, preventing further rotation of the split ring planetary drive in the direction, and a second position in which the travel end stop does not engage the stop on the planet carrier. The travel end stop may be a deadbolt, a snap ring or pivoting pawl.

Abstract: An engine variable camshaft timing phaser (10) includes a sprocket (12), three ring gears (26, 28, 30), multiple planet gears (24), and a sun gear (22). The sprocket (12) receives rotational drive input from an engine crankshaft. One or more of the three ring gear(s) (26, 28, 30) receives rotational drive input from the sprocket (12) and rotates with the sprocket (12), and the remaining ring gear(s) (26, 28, 30) transmit rotational drive output to an engine camshaft (62). All three of the ring gears (26, 28, 30) engage with the planet gears (24). And the sun gear (22) also engages with the planet gears (24). In operation, relative rotational speeds between the sprocket (12) and the sun gear (22) causes the engine camshaft (62) to advance or retard engine valve opening and closing.

Abstract: A motor control apparatus for adjusting a cam phase includes a motor control part, which controls a current supplied to a stator coil by controlling plural switching elements forming an inverter to turn on and off. The motor control part stops the current supplied to the stator coil each time a motor rotates a predetermined rotation angle interval in a power generation control mode, in which a rotation torque is generated in a direction to impede the motor rotation. The motor control part maintains the power generation control mode when a rotation signal is determined as varying in a predetermined time period. The motor control part switches over an operation mode to a normal control mode to generate a rotation torque in a direction to promote the motor rotation when the rotation signal is determined as not varying in the predetermined time period.

Abstract: An engine variable camshaft timing phaser (10) includes a sprocket (12) and a planetary gear set (14). The sprocket (12) receives rotational drive input from an engine crankshaft. The planetary gear set (14) includes two or more ring gears (34, 36), multiple planet gears (32), a sun gear (30), a first set of teeth (82), and a second set of teeth (40, 62). One of the ring gears (34, 36) can be connected to the sprocket (12) and one of the ring gears (34, 36) transmits rotational drive output to an engine camshaft. The sun gear (30) engages with the planet gears (32) and is driven by an electric motor (38). In order to bring the planetary gear set (14) to a locked condition, the first set of teeth (82) and the second set of teeth (40, 62) are mated with each other.

Abstract: A camshaft phaser for controllably varying the phase relationship between a crankshaft and a camshaft of an internal combustion engine includes a housing connectable to the crankshaft and having a housing bore extending therethrough along an axis. Abstract: A system (42) including a phaser (28), a motor (38), and a controller (40) for controlling the phase between a camshaft (18) and a crankshaft (16) of an engine (10). The phaser (28) is attached to the camshaft (18), is in communication with the crankshaft (16), and is configured to adjust the phase of the camshaft (18). The motor (38) actuates the phaser (28) and is operatively attached to and in communication with the phaser (28) such that rotation of the crankshaft (16) back-drives the motor (38) to subsequently generate a signal. The controller (40) is in electrical communication with the motor (38), is responsive to the signal, and uses the signal to determine the rotational speed of the motor (38) to thereby commutate the motor (38) and subsequently drive the motor (38) so as to actuate the phaser (28) and control the phase of the camshaft (18).
