In this apparatus, a clock reference is detected from a packet signal containing the clock reference and a digitally compressed video signal, a time stamp for a packet is generated using a clock signal in phase with the clock reference and added to the particular packet, and the packet signals with the time stamp added thereto are recorded closely to each other in a data storage element such as a magnetic recording medium. At playback, the packet interval is output by being restored to the original length on the basis of the time stamp added to the packet in store.

A system and method for evaluating a video signal comprising a plurality of video frames. In the plurality video frames, the number of pixels changed from one frame to the next are analysed and each frame is identified as being a repeat if a set proportion of the pixels present in the current frame match those present in the previous frame. The resultant pattern of repeat frames in the video signal is recorded. The resultant pattern is then scanned to determine whether or not a given repeat frame is part of a temporally repetitive pattern and those repeat frames not determined to be part of the temporally repetitive pattern are identified. As result of the above, video quality assessment is able to treat these two types of temporal artefact separately so as to distinguish between the almost invisible regular frame loss and the visually disturbing irregular frame loss.

Sequences of patterns are identified in each media resource of the media archive. Elements of the sequences associated with different media resources are correlated such that a set of correlated elements is associated with the same event that occurred in the given time interval. The synchronization information of the processed media resources is represented in a flexible and extensible data format. The synchronization information is used for correction of errors occurring in the media resources of a media archive, for enhanced synchronous playback of the archive resources, and for unified access to, and modification of, the archive resources.
