    Abstract: A releasable connection device for connecting a motor driven drive cable to a closure includes a pin attached to the closure and having a spherical head. A housing member connected to the cable has an elongated slot formed in a lateral wall and receiving the spherical head of the pin. A ramp surface formed on the housing member at the end of the elongated slot furthest from the cable is engaged by the head of the pin. A spring clip mounted on the housing member has opposed spring arms which encircle the spherical head to retain the head of the pin in the elongated slot of the housing member to connect the motor driven drive element and the vehicle body closure. The spring arms yield in response to a predetermined level of forced imposed thereon by the spherical head of the pin so that the pin is ejected laterally through the opening to disconnect the drive element from the closure.

    Abstract: In a door opening and closing apparatus a reversible drive motor and door actuator are mounted in the framing above a door header. The vertically disposed drive shaft of the motor is connected with the door actuator through a friction clutch equipped drive train including a series of speed reducing torque increasing cog belts and pulleys. The drive train operates pivoting linkage secured at one end to the door for biasing the door open or closed in response to the direction of rotation of the drive motor. A circuit connects a source of electrical energy with the drive motor through a plurality of current switching relays also inducing magnetic flux in the field windings of a braking slave motor driven by the driving motor. Door opening action is initiated by a foot pressure switch.

    Abstract: An apparatus for shifting a gate from a closed position to an opened position and from the open position to the closed position with respect to an access opening. The apparatus comprises a housing with a motor in the housing, as for example, an electric motor. A drive shaft extends outwardly from the housing and is operable by the motor by means of a drive mechanism. A drive arm is connected to the outer end of the drive shaft, outwardly of the housing, and is rotatable thereby. The drive arm is designed to permit a lever arm or a lever arm assembly to be coupled thereto and which is also capable of being coupled to a gate for moving the same between the opened and closed positions. Further, the apparatus comprises a shaft coupling mechanism operatively associated with the drive arm for coupling the drive arm to the drive shaft so that the drive arm is rotatable with the drive shaft when the motor is operated. In addition, a disconnect mechanism, preferably a manually operable disconnect mechanism, is associated with the drive arm, and is operatively connected to the coupling mechanism for disengaging the drive shaft from the drive arm. This permits the drive arm to rotate independently of the drive shaft in emergency situations, as for example, in cases of power failure where the motor cannot be operated. The drive mechanism is designed with a worm and worm gear construction so that one cannot unauthorizedly attempt to rotate the drive arm without completing disengaging the drive arm from the drive shaft.

    Abstract: An improved garage door operator of the motor-driven chain-and-sprocket type comprising a molded plastic gear case assembly supporting an output shaft for rotation relative thereto. A molded plastic worm wheel is loosely disposed on the shaft for limited rotation relative thereto and is driven by a reversible electric motor through a worm. Camming surfaces on the worm wheel and a second element which is fixedly disposed on the shaft form a low-torque coupling such that under normal conditions the motor drives the shaft to move the garage door. If the door encounters an obstacle and is unable to move, continued rotation of the motor drives the cam surface of the second element up the cam surface of the wheel so as to axially shift the second element relative to the gear case to trip a reversing switch. A rachet knob projects outside of the gear case permitting manual adjustment of the low-torque coupling.
