Three embodiments of a single-step lancet are disclosed. Each such lancet embodiment provides true one-step operation. In a single operational step requiring only a unidirectional displacement of an actuator into a housing, a lancet blade is removed from an aseptic environment which protects and retains the lancet blade in a pre-sterilized state within the housing prior to use, stores energy in an energy storage medium, activates the lancet blade to perform a lance and for safety retracts the lancet blade into the housing.

Method and apparatus associated with safe retraction of medical needles after use. Embodiments are disclosed for self-retracting needle systems for both blood draw, syringe and catheter insertion systems. Invention manufacture requires only a minimal number and complexity of parts such that a projected manufacturing cost is potentially low enough to permit the apparatus to be cost competitive with contemporary non-self retracting needle systems. Methods for making and assembling each of the disclosed the embodiments is also disclosed. One blood draw embodiment can be made with as few as three molded parts. Energy-storing, needle-retracting mechanisms comprise elastic tubing and vacuum generating piston parts. In an elastic tubing embodiment, selective, constrictive control of stretched tubing volumes effectively inhibits regurgitant flow from the needle. In all embodiments, needle retraction is a single handed operation permitting a technician's other hand to be used in wound care. A combination of parts, comprising the apparatus housing and a needle cover, are used as a transport container which protects a medical needle from inadvertent contamination with requiring special packaging, thereby, further reducing apparatus costs.

A one-time-use, self-powered, restricted entry lancet apparatus which provides a smaller incision in a surface or epidermal layers of a lancing site than in subsurface or dermal layers. Two embodiments of the invention are disclosed. Generally, each embodiment includes a housing, a blade component, a rotary spring and an actuator. The blade generally has a proximal portion and a distal section. The proximal portion is disposed within the housing and is displaced laterally in a first direction during a lancing procedure. During the lancing procedure, the distal section is extended from the housing through an open exit slot and is rotated about an abutment member of the exit slot to be laterally displaced in a direction opposite the first direction. This rotation about the abutment results in an incision pattern which has a smaller cut in the epidermis than in the dermis. Thus, surface trauma is reduced while a broad cut is made in capillary rich regions of the dermal layers.

A one-time-use, self-powered, disposable lancet apparatus packaged both as strips comprising a plurality of lancets and as individually packaged lancets. A novel lancet blade design comprises means for attaching each blade in a loader stack for an automated assembly machine. Individually packaged lancets are disclosed in both one-step and two-step embodiments. In each case, every lancet comprises a self-contained package which houses a powered lancet blade before use and a spent blade after use to assure safety from inadvertent sticks both before and after a lancing procedure.

A mechanism for aligning the elements of an optical system is disclosed. One aspect of the present invention is an alignment mechanism which includes lead screws placed on opposite corners of the elements to be aligned. The elements are provided with threaded holes of different pitch, and the lead screw is provided with threads of the same unequal pitches as the elements, thereby forming a differential lead screw. The threads include a locking thread which assures a positive lock between the lead screw and the elements to be aligned and eliminates backlash between them. Another aspect of the present invention is an interference fit mechanism which is provided by the employment of a slightly-oversized flexible boss which mates with a cavity. The boss is provided with a thin outer wall capable of flexing when the boss is inserted into the cavity. Yet another aspect of the present invention includes a wobble plate comprising a spherical socket and housing. The housing includes a mounting for an optical element and is rotatable within the socket. Application of an adhesive to the space between the socket and housing secures the relative positions of the socket and housing when the alignment operations have been completed.

The medical needle shield apparatus is for use with a needle having proximal and distal ends, wherein the shield is slidably movable along the needle from a proximal position where the distal end of the needle is exposed, to a distal position where the shield covers the distal end of the needle. The shield comprises one or more clips having two or more apertures through which the needle passes, wherein the apertures have surfaces. A clip positioning member, in communication with at least one of the clips, positions the aperture surfaces of at least one of the clips when a portion of the clip positioning member in contact with the needle is advanced past the distal end of the needle such that at least a portion of the aperture surfaces of the two or more apertures binds to the needle with opposing binding forces so as to secure the shield to the needle.

Described herein is a patient interfacing system for sampling the inspired and expired gases of a patient and removing moisture from the sample. In one embodiment of the present invention, a patient link receives the gases from the patient's airway circuit and a vaporization section vaporizes condensed moisture in the sample. A separator section allows the vaporized moisture component of the sample to exit the patient interfacing system before the gas sample reaches the monitoring instrument. A filter may also be utilized to prevent condensed moisture, particulates and liquids from entering the monitoring instrument. Thus, the patient interfacing system of the present invention provides a reliable, cost effective and efficient means for delivering gas samples to a monitoring instrument which reduces or prevents water condensation inside the gas analysis portion of the monitoring instrument.
