    摘要: A mechanism for aligning the elements of an optical system is disclosed. One aspect of the present invention is an alignment mechanism which includes lead screws placed on opposite corners of the elements to be aligned. The elements are provided with threaded holes of different pitch, and the lead screw is provided with threads of the same unequal pitches as the elements, thereby forming a differential lead screw. The threads include a locking thread which assures a positive lock between the lead screw and the elements to be aligned and eliminates backlash between them. Another aspect of the present invention is an interference fit mechanism which is provided by the employment of a slightly-oversized flexible boss which mates with a cavity. The boss is provided with a thin outer wall capable of flexing when the boss is inserted into the cavity. Yet another aspect of the present invention includes a wobble plate comprising a spherical socket and housing. The housing includes a mounting for an optical element and is rotatable within the socket. Application of an adhesive to the space between the socket and housing secures the relative positions of the socket and housing when the alignment operations have been completed.

    摘要: A practical, low cost safety device for phlebotomy. Preparation for operation of the device involves elongating an otherwise shortened-for-transport apparatus to extend a medical assembly and needle from a housing for use in a medical procedure. The act of elongating energizes an energy storing component and cocks a releasable latch. The energy storing component is preferably a vacuum drawing plunger and tube combination. When the medical procedure is complete, distortion of a portion of the housing causes powered retraction of the needle. After retraction, the needle is fully contained, permitting the device to be laid aside without fear of an inadvertent needle stick. The housing comprises a proximal barrel and a distal needle containment section. The barrel comprises a sampling tube stopper piercing cannula. The distal section is disposed in-line, but off-axis from the barrel and comprises an enclosed conduit which communicates with the cannula and with a pathway to the medical needle through the medical needle assembly. Construction of the device requires only three injection molded parts, the housing, a needle hub and a needle cover. Further, as the needle is retracted, communication from the conduit is severed and the pathway to the needle is closed to reduce likelihood of blood spatter. The conduit may be used as a blood flash visualization chamber.

    摘要: An automated analytical apparatus comprises an introduction station for receiving a plurality of reagent packages. Each package has a plurality of receptacles, at least one of which includes a sample liquid to be analyzed, and at least one of which includes a liquid reagent for forming a reaction mixture with the sample liquid. A liquid transfer station is included for transferring liquid contained in one or more receptacles of a reagent package into, out of or among different receptacles thereof, including the formation of the reaction mixture. A detector is provided for detecting a characteristic of the sample by analyzing the reaction mixture contained in one of the receptacles of a package. A storage area is included within the apparatus for storing a plurality of reagent packages. A shuttle system transports individual reagent packages in any order and in any direction between the introduction area, the liquid transfer station, the detector and the storage area.

    摘要: An improved method of preparing composite multifilament superconducting wire of Nb.sub.3 Sn in a copper matrix which eliminates the necessity of coating the drawn wire with tin. A generalized cylindrical billet of an alloy of copper containing at least 15 weight percent niobium, present in the copper as discrete, randomly distributed and oriented dendritic-shaped particles, is provided with at least one longitudinal opening which is filled with tin to form a composite drawing rod. The drawing rod is then drawn to form a ductile composite multifilament wire containing a filament of tin. The ductile wire containing the tin can then be wound into magnet coils or other devices before heating to diffuse the tin through the wire to react with the niobium forming Nb.sub.3 Sn. Also described is an improved method for making large billets of the copper-niobium alloy by consumable-arc casting.
