Abstract:
A technique for allowing a first and second group of users to share access to a communication channel such as a wireless radio channel is disclosed. The first group of users can be a group of legacy users such as those that use digital CDMA cellular telephone equipment based on the IS-95 standard. The second group of users can be a group of web surfers that code their transmissions using one of multiple formats. The first group of users can share one modulation structure such as, on a reverse link, using unique phase offsets of a common pseudorandom noise (PN) code. The second group of users can share another modulation structure, but in a manner that is consistent and compatible with the users of the first group. Specifically, the users of the second group may all use the same PN code and code phase offset. Each channel used by the second group of users can be uniquely identified by a corresponding unique orthogonal code.
Abstract:
A transmitter/receiver system for high data transfer in a wireless communication system includes a physical layer processor that comprises an FEC coder, a demultiplexer and a plurality of modem processors. The FEC coder applies error correction codes to the high data rate signal. Thereafter, the demultiplexer distributes portions of the coded high data rate signal to the modem processors. Each modem processor processes its respective portion of the coded signal for transmission in an independent channel.

An infra-red proximity fuze system for a homing missile is provided that has Mercury Cadmium Telluride detector cells cooled to at least −40° C., and a frequency response range of 5-7 microns, so as to be sensitive to target skin radiation due to kinetic heating and insensitive to jet-exhaust plume radiation. Three optics/detector modules are equidistantly spaced around the missile axis and each has first and second detector elements the three first elements being connected in a common channel to constitute a guard beam and the three second elements being likewise connected to constitute a firing beam, the guard beam field being displaced angularly from the firing beam field in the forward missile axis direction by about 6°.
Abstract:
A system causes a scan angle of a directional antenna to change temporarily from a current scan angle to at least one trial scan angle during reception of predetermined portions of an information carrying signal. At the trial scan angle(s), a trial metric associated with each trial scan angle is determined by the system. The system then selects a next scan angle based on the trial metrics. Examples of predetermined portions of the information carrying signal include the Power Control Bit (PCB) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) block.

The active and passive antenna elements are arranged to form a triangle with a vertex. The vertex includes a vertex angle and the active antenna element is disposed at the vertex. The vertex angle is between 90 degrees and 180 degrees.
Abstract:
A transparent vinyl pouch is mounted on the lower back of a motorcycle jacket to allow the driver to further customize his/her motorcycle. The pouch carries the license plate in order to keep the customized motorcycle tag-free, or is interchangeable with other customized plates, which complement the driver's helmet and/or motorcycle. The pouch also serves to provide greater visibility to the license plate. The pouch is worn on the lower back so other drivers can easily see it. In alternative embodiments of the present invention, there may be hooks inside the pouch, which serve as additional support of the license plate, and there may be lights centered about the license plate, or reflective paint used in order to increase visibility of the plate at nighttime or in bad weather conditions. The pouch closure may also have a locking device to prevent the closure (zipper or hook-and-loop closure) from opening and therefore preventing loss or theft of the license plate.
Abstract:
The present invention provides for making code rate adjustments and modulation type adjustments in a pseudonoise (PN) encoded CDMA system. Coding rate adjustments may be made by changing the number of information bits per symbol, or Forward Error Code (FEC) coding rate. A forward error correction (FEC) block size is maintained at a constant amount. Therefore, as the number of information bits per symbol are increased, an integer multiple of bits per epoch is always maintained. The scheme permits for a greater flexibility and selection of effective data rates providing information bit rates ranging from, for example, approximately 50 kilobits per second to over 5 mega bits per second (Mbps) in one preferred embodiment.
Abstract:
An adaptive antenna used in a receive only mode with a separate omnidirectional transmit antenna. The arrangement is especially effective for small, handheld wireless devices. The transmit antenna maybe integrated with the receive array by utilizing a horizontally polarized transmit and vertically polarized receiver ray. In other embodiments, the transmit antenna may be physically separate and not integrated with the receive array. In either case there is separate receive and transmit signal port as an interface to radio transceiver equipment. The use of an adaptive antenna in the receive only direction has the potential to increase forward links capacity to levels equal to or greater than reverse link capacity. This allows for a significant increase in the overall number of users that may be active at the same time in a wireless system.
Abstract:
A physical layer frequency translating repeater (600, 700) for use in a wireless network includes signal processor (710-714) coupled with a signal processing bus (711), a processor (627) and a memory (650). The physical layer repeater conducts physical layer repeating and selectively conducts layer 2 and possibly layer 3 functions depending on network conditions and other factors. A demodulator (623) can extract address information such as media access control (MAC) addressing to enable packets to be redirected, terminated, stored and forwarded, if necessary, based on network conditions.
