Abstract:
A record carrier provided with at least two parallel information layers (20, 21) suitable to be scanned by means of a single scanning head is described. Each information layer is provided with a control block (26, 31) in which information is stored which can be used for reading the user information stored in this information layer. The control blocks are placed in the record carrier in such a way that they can be sequentially read by means of a scanning device, with a minimum displacement of the scanning head. The user information may be stored in a first format in the first information layer, and the same user information may be stored in a second format in a second information layer. The first format may be a low-density structure and the second format may be a high-density structure.
Abstract:
In a method of manufacturing a semiconductor device comprising a semiconductor body 1 which is provided at a surface 2 with a transistor comprising a gate structure 21, a patterned layer 10 is applied defining the area of the gate structure 21. Subsequently, a dielectric layer 18 is applied in such a way, that the thickness of the dielectric layer 18 next to the patterned layer 10 is substantially equally large or larger than the height of the patterned layer 10, which dielectric layer 18 is removed over part of its thickness until the patterned layer 10 is exposed. Then, the patterned layer 10 is subjected to a material removing treatment, thereby forming a recess 19 in the dielectric layer 18, and a contact window 28,29 is provided in the dielectric layer. A conductive layer 30 is applied filling the recess 19 and the contact window 28,29, which conductive layer 30 is subsequently shaped into the gate structure 21 and a contact structure 26,27 establishing an electrical contact with the surface 2 of the semiconductor body 1.
Abstract:
An optical disc is described for recording data, which disc has a recording area for recording data encoded in optical marks at a recording density. The recording area has circular or spiral tracks provided with a servopattern comprising headers alternating with track portions. The headers contain position information encoded in preformed marks. The track portions comprise periodic characteristics, e.g. a wobble, to synchronise the data writing and reading operations. For reliably detecting the headers the phase of the periodic characteristics comprises a phase jump at a predetermined distance before each header.
Abstract:
A device is disclosed for encoding a stream of databits of a binary source signal (S) into a stream of databits of a binary channel signal (C), wherein the stream of databits of the source signal is divided into n-bit source words (x1, x2), which device comprises converting means (CM) conceived to convert said n-bit source words into corresponding m-bit channel words (y1, y2, y3) in accordance with a conversion of the Jacoby type, where m and n are integers, with m>n. The device further comprises control means (10) for carrying out DC-control on said binary channel signal by introducing a freedom of choice in the source-to-channel conversion. Furthermore, a decoding device is disclosed for decoding the channel signal obtained by means of the encoding device.
Abstract:
An optical record carrier (1) is provided with tracks having a groove (4) wobbled in a radial direction and predetermined positions (18) along the track. Embossed pits (19) at the predetermined positions represent addressing information. The phase of the wobble near the predetermined positions depends on whether a pit is present (19) on a predetermined position or not (20).
Abstract:
The invention relates to an arrangement for deriving an ancillary signal from a compressed digital video signal (e.g. MPEG). The ancillary signal comprises selected parts of the main signal, for example, the DC coefficients of I-pictures, or the unscrambled parts. The ancillary signal thus obtained can be used for display in a (multi-) picture-in-picture television receiver, or as an nullappetizernull in order to encourage the user to pay a subscription fee. The ancillary signal can separately be recorded in digital video recorders so as to assist the user in finding the beginning of a scrambled program on tape. The ancillary signal can also be generated at the transmitter end and transmitted at a low bit rate. A decoder for decoding such an ancillary signal is considerably simpler and less expensive than a full-spec MPEG decoder.
Abstract:
A tracking index cathode ray tube circuit is described, comprising tracking means connected to a shadowmaskless tracking cathode ray tube for deriving a tracking signal therefrom, where the tracking means comprises a modulator demodulator circuit. The tracking signal from the CRT tube is thus modulated, AC coupled to a low voltage and demodulated to obtain a baseband tracking signal for use as a control signal for the electron beam spots on the screen of the CRT tube.
Abstract:
A main side of the device (10) has a keyboard with keys (4A, 5A, 4C) and a display (6). According to the invention, part of the keyboard (4) can be moved between two operational positions for which the device retains the same size: a first position called reduced keyboard (and large display) (FIG. 1C, 1D) and a second position with an extended keyboard (and a small display) (FIG. 1A, 1B). The keys that are accessible for one position are inaccessible for another position and vice versa.
Abstract:
A display device (506) is driven in a number of sub-fields. Each of the sub-fields is for outputting a respective illumination level by the display device. In each sub-field, a pixel of the displayed image may emit an amount of light corresponding to the particular sub-field, depending on whether it is switched on or not. A required intensity level of the pixel is realized by selecting an appropriate combination of sub-fields in which the pixel is switched on. According to the invention, a selection is made from the possible intensity levels that can be generated by all possible combinations of sub-fields. The selected intensity levels are uniformly spaced on a perceptual scale, allowing a relatively small number of intensity levels for displaying an image with a relatively high perceived quality. The image display unit (300) has a means (306) that is arranged to store the combinations of sub-fields for the respective selected intensity levels.
Abstract:
A method of, and apparatus for, encoding and multiplexing a digital video picture are provided using intra-coded fields only at a relatively high bit-rate, with each picture being encoded as a sequence of slices from the video image field. The encoding suitably complies with MPEG or similar requirements, and the intra-coding is further constrained so that the maximum number of bits for each slice in the picture is limited, and the delivery schedule of the bits to a decoder is more tightly constrained than is implied by the MPEG decoding models. In this way it is possible to build a high quality, low cost MPEG (or similar) encoder and decoder for video communications over digital interconnection standards such as IEEE 1394.
