    Abstract: A fuel injector includes a needle valve including a spring-retaining section and a guide section that is adjacent to the spring-retaining section. The spring-retaining section includes an elongated portion and a flange that are together configured to support a spring assembly. The guide section includes a plurality of constricted portions alternatingly arranged with a plurality of expanded portions to define an undulating shape of the guide section. Each of the plurality of expanded portions includes a plurality of indentations to permit fuel to travel therealong to exit an outlet of the fuel injector. The guide section has a length that is substantially equal to a length of the spring-retaining section.

    Abstract: A fuel system includes a fuel injector having a split check assembly with a control piece, an outlet piece, and a check sleeve. A trapped volume is formed between the control piece and the outlet piece within the check sleeve, to hydraulically couple the control piece to the outlet piece. A starting rate shape clearance fluidly connects the trapped volume to a fuel cavity and is formed between the check sleeve and one of the control piece or outlet piece received therein, and modulates a starting rate shape of fuel injection from the fuel injector. Related methodology is disclosed.

    Abstract: A dual fuel injector in a dual common rail fuel system includes an injector body defining a liquid fuel supply passage to a liquid fuel nozzle outlet, and a gaseous fuel supply passage to a gaseous fuel nozzle outlet. A liquid fuel needle check is movable within the injector body and has an opening hydraulic surface exposed to a fuel pressure of a liquid fuel common rail. A gaseous fuel needle check is positioned side by side with the liquid fuel needle check and has an opening hydraulic surface exposed to the fuel pressure of the liquid fuel common rail. Sensitivity to differences in gaseous fuel rail pressure and liquid fuel rail pressure is reduced by the design.
