Abstract:
A galvanometer unit includes a limited-rotation motor with a load element such as a mirror attached to a shaft extending from the motor. In a servo loop that controls the angular position of the mirror, a position-sensor attached to the shaft provides position feedback information. The sensor includes a rotor which is positioned at the null point of the fundamental torsional resonance mode of the rotating system, thereby essentially eliminating feedback components resulting from the resonance.
Abstract:
A method for filling a liquid filled container includes the steps of providing a container, placing a capsule defining a cavity in the container, filling the container with a liquid, and allowing a gaseous exchange between the liquid and the cavity to provide a benefit to one of the capsule and the liquid. The invention also includes a method for providing a retrievable payload in a liquid filled container that includes the steps of providing a capsule in a liquid filled container wherein the capsule has a cavity and is associated with the payload. The method further includes the step of pressurizing the cavity. The present invention also includes a capsule having a body defining a cavity and an opening communicating with the cavity, a payload disposed in the cavity, sealing means for sealing the cavity which contains gas at a first pressure greater than atmospheric pressure when the cavity is sealed, and vent means for selectively venting the pressurized gas from the cavity. Other embodiments of the capsule include a cap engageable with the body at the opening and movable between a sealed position wherein the cap engages the body to seal the cavity and an open position providing access to the cavity. Connecting means and presentation means may also be included with the capsule for coupling the cap to the body when the cap is removed from the opening and for moving the payload toward the opening when the cap is in the open position, respectively.
Abstract:
An adjustable masking mechanism for use in connection with the exposure of a sample to a beam of analytical radiation and a beam of viewing radiation that facilitates aligning the movable elements of the mask with the edges of the sample. Whereas the prior art mechanisms utilize materials that are opaque to both the analytical radiation and the viewing radiation, the present invention uses one or more movable elements that are substantially opaque to the analytical radiation and at least partially transmissive to at least a portion of the spectral range of the viewing radiation.
Abstract:
An alphanumeric identification device for land and construction survey traverse control points comprised of a fluorescent plastic tag with metal detector electronic signal return to enhance location of said point. Each tag has a unique, highly visible alphanumeric indicia thereon which are in a sequential order and in sets to provide an accurate record of the number assigned to each central point.
Abstract:
The biomedical pump includes a housing with an internal pump chamber defined by a first rigid concave wall formed by the pump body, and an opposed flexible wall defined by a diaphragm incorporating a heat responsive disc for a thermal-responsive pumping movement between a first position overlying and conforming to the body defined first wall and a second position outwardly spaced therefrom. An inlet passageway and an outlet passageway each communicate with the interior of the chamber through the pump body. Each passageway incorporates a one-way check valve for a directional control of the fluid flow in response to the heat induced diaphragm movement.
Abstract:
An externally located blood monitoring system has a single access to a patient's blood vessel for monitoring blood associated parameters. A three-position valve permits three modes of operation including flushing, blood pressure monitoring while maintaining patency of the access, and blood sampling while also permitting monitoring of other blood related parameters, such as blood temperature.
Abstract:
There is disclosed a helmet useful for crew members of an aircraft from which they may be ejected at high speeds. The helmet comprises a shell which fits over the head in a conventional manner and is provided with a strap which passes beneath the chin to retain the helmet on the head. A visor housing attached to, and spaced from, the shell is positioned to cover the forward crown part of the head and has portions which extend downwardly along the sides of the face of the wearer, which merge into the planes of flat areas at the ears. By this structure the usual bulbous shape at the ears commonly found in helmets is avoided and the side-to-side dimension is reduced. There are formed at the upper part of the visor housing a number of discontinuous louvers forming ridges through forward facing walls of which there are apertures. During an ejection, air scooped into the region between the visor housing and the shell exits through these louver openings. A openable closure at the rear of the visor housing closes this space between the visor housing and the shell at the rear so that the air scooped within the visor housing will not emerge from the rear. The effect of the ridges and the apertures is to disrupt the smooth air flow over the top of the helmet which would otherwise occur and which would cause undesirable lift.
