摘要: A method of producing a glass-plastic, laminated, ophthalmic lens structure in a continuous operation. A thin, flexible, plastic adhesive layer is applied to a glass element to form a composite body that is inserted in a cylindrical gasket in such manner as to fit snugly and be sealed from the ambient. A monomeric formulation is flowed onto the adhesive layer and cured to form a laminated lens blank.

摘要: This invention is directed to the production of cuprous halide- or a cuprous-cadmium halide-containing glass articles which are essentially completely opaque to ultraviolet radiation and can be essentially completely opaque to radiation within the region of wavelengths of up to 550 nm, but are transparent to visible radiations having a wavelength longer than the radiation within the region of opacity. The method involves exposing the glass articles to a hydrogen gas-containing atmosphere at a temperature between about 375.degree.-500.degree. C. for a period of at least 18 hours to develop an integral reduced layer in at least one surface of the article having a depth effective to prevent the transmission of ultraviolet radiation and radiation having a wavelength up to 550 nm through the article.

摘要: This invention is directed to a method for making tinted photochromic glass articles having an integral reduced surface layer exhibiting color, the glass utilizing silver halide crystals as the photochromic agent. The method generally comprises heat treating the glass article in a heating chamber in an atmosphere of flowing hydrogen at temperatures below 500.degree. C. The specific steps of the inventive method comprise:(a) initially flowing hydrogen gas into said heat treating chamber at a sufficiently rapid rate to essentially instantaneously fill said chamber with the gas;(b) immediately thereafter decreasing the flow of said the hydrogen gas to permit careful control of the rate at which reduction takes place in the glass surface; and(c) continuing that gas flow for a sufficient length of time to produce an integral reduced surface layer on both front and back surfaces of the article having a combined depth effective to exhibit a color, but not of such individual depth as to prevent the passage of ultraviolet radiation through the front surface of the article.

摘要: This invention is directed to a method for heat treating a sheet of a potentially photochromic glass to cause the growth of silver halide crystals therein which impart photochromic properties thereto, wherein the heat treated sheet will be essentially free from thermal deformation and surface defects, and the photochromic properties exhibited therein will be essentially uniform across the area of the sheet. The method involves first placing a sheet of potentially photochromic glass on top of a sheet of carrier glass that exhibits a softening point at least 50.degree. C. higher than the temperature at which the potentially photochromic glass will be heat treated, and thereafter subjecting the stacked sheets to the heat treatment temperature desired for growing silver halide crystals in the glass.
