Abstract: Presented are systems and methods for deriving speed limits of designated road segments by mining large-scale vehicle data traces. A method for controlling operation of a motor vehicle includes: determining a current location of the vehicle; determining a designated road segment corresponding to the vehicle's location; receiving host speed data indicative of the vehicle's speed while travelling on the road segment for a calibrated timeframe; receiving crowd-sourced speed data indicative of the speeds of participatory vehicles while travelling on the road segment for the calibrated timeframe; accumulating a speed distribution function for the road segment based on the host and crowd-sourced speed data; generating a finite mixture model from the speed distribution function to estimate a speed limit range; selecting a speed limit candidate from the estimated speed limit range; and transmitting command signals to a vehicle subsystem to execute a control operation based on the selected speed limit candidate.

Abstract: Examples of techniques for estimating stability margins in a steer-by-wire system are disclosed. In one example implementation, a method for open-loop steer-by-wire (SbW) system linearization includes linearizing, by a processing device, an open-loop SbW system at different operating points. The method further includes determining, by the processing device, an open-loop transfer function of the op en-loop SbW system. The method further includes estimating, by the processing device, margins of stability for the open-loop SbW system. The method further includes implementing the margins of stability into a vehicle to reduce instability in a steering system of the vehicle.

Abstract: A system and method for determining a frequency response of a power steering system is disclosed including a steering assist motor configured to generate an assist torque about an axis of a steering shaft when activated. The method includes monitoring, by a controller, a torque transducer that measures a steering output torque of the steering shaft experienced during a first frequency sweep and a second frequency sweep. The method also includes determining, by the controller, a transfer function based on the steering output torque monitored during the first frequency sweep and the second frequency sweep, where the transfer function indicates the response by the power steering system.

Abstract: A power steering assembly includes a steering unit and a motor. A controller includes a processor and tangible, non-transitory memory on which is recorded instructions for executing a method of self-diagnosis for the assembly. If a plurality of enabling conditions is met, the steering unit is caused to rotate through a plurality of angles from an original position, via a command to the motor. The steering unit is caused to rotate first in a forward direction up to a predefined maximum angle, second in a reverse direction up to a negative of the predefined maximum angle and third in the forward direction back to the original position. The controller is configured to obtain motor torque data characterizing torque of the motor at the plurality of angles. The assembly is controlled based at least partially on the motor torque data and predetermined baseline data.

Abstract: A system for fusing two or more versions of map data together includes one or more central computers that receive road network data representing a road network for a predefined geofenced area. The central computers receive road network data that includes a discrete random curve that represents lane markings. The discrete random curve includes a plurality of state vectors that are each defined by a respective location and tangent angle. The central computers estimate the position for the state vectors of the discrete random curve based on a signed distance and the tangent angle by minimizing a spatial Kalman filter cost function and execute a Kalman smoothening function to estimate the position and the tangent angle for the state vectors that are part of the discrete random curve, where the state vectors each represent a map point of the fused map data.
