A method for treating paper which comprises applying to the surface of the paper an aqueous medium containing a sizing composition consisting essentially of 75 to 99.9 wt % polyvinyl alcohol which is at least 95 mole % hydrolyzed and 0.1 to 25 wt % ketene dimer represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R.sup.1 are the same or different hydrocarbyl groups having 8-30 carbon atoms.

Nonwoven fibrous sheets bonded with polyvinyl alcohol, intended for use in pre-moistened condition as skin cleansing tissues, are folded and packaged in closed containers or in individual sealed water impervious envelopes; said packaged sheets being maintained in contact with a dilute aqueous solution of boric acid. The boric acid imparts improved wet tensile strength to the sheet during storage and use by the consumer but may be safely disposed of, after use, by flushing in plain water without danger of clogging the plumbing system. Instead of boric acid solution, one may employ for the indicated purpose a non-alkaline aqueous solution of a salt which acts as a precipitating or gelling agent for polyvinyl alcohol, said salt being one having an acid to neutral pH on hydrolysis.

A machine includes a frame, a conveyor with a plurality of open-top bottom-apertured recesses for receiving, conveying and dropping skin-containing berries. Upper and lower needle assemblies are supported on the frame above and below the conveyor. Each needle assembly includes a plurality of needles with five-star-knife-edged sharp tips and an actuator mechanism for oscillatingly moving the needles as the recesses pass the needles, the needles being movable between an extended position where the sharp tips penetrate opposing sides of the skin of the berries but with a stroke causing the tips to only penetrate partially into an interior of the berries causing star-shaped slit patterns. The actuator mechanism also moves the needles to a retracted position where the sharp tips are fully retracted. A related method is provided for piercing multiple sides of the skin of berries without unacceptably damaging the appearance or shape or internal mass of the berries.

Hydrogen powered air vehicles that in some embodiments can fly with very long endurance (10 or more days) at altitudes over 60,000 ft carrying payloads of up to 2,000 pounds. Embodiments may include features such as large wingspan relative to fuselage and an all composite or partial composite structure for light weight and strength. The aircraft of the invention use one or more internal combustion engines adapted for hydrogen combustion, each engine driving propellers. The hydrogen fuel is stored on board in containers, located within the fuselage, as a cryogenic liquid, and is vaporized in a heat exchanger before delivery to the internal combustion engine.
Abstract:
A new and improved appliance boom having opposite ends. One of the ends is adapted to be secured to the bucket of an articulated powered bucket loader. The other end is adapted to be secured to an appliance. The boom has means for guiding appliance control cables from end to end. At least one control cable having opposite ends is trained through the means. One of the control cable ends is attached to the appliance; the other of the control cable ends is attached to a control in the cab of the bucket loader to which the boom is attached. The appliance cradle may be secured to appliances ranging from crane pulleys, chain saws, and rotary drills, reciprocating saws, to other rotary or reciprocating equipment. The appliance boom may be secured to the bucket of a conventional bucket loader and unattached conveniently and stored when not in use.

A method for preparing a high solids, aqueous paper coating composition which comprises adding dry particulate solids of a partially hydrolyzed, low molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol to a high solids, aqueous paper coating composition and mixing without external heating until dissolved, preferably by mixing the polyvinyl alcohol solids into the aqueous pigment dispersion followed by the addition of binders and other additives to make the paper coating composition.

Abstract:
An improved papermaking process has been developed to enhance the properties of the resultant paper or paper-type products. The process involves adding a polyvinyl alcohol/vinylamine copolymer along with a crosslinking agent at the dry end step of a conventional papermaking process. Improvements in the properties of the resultant paper products are observed, especially at low levels of copolymer addition.
