Abstract: An example method for forming a high temperature coating includes depositing a carbon layer on to a surface of a composite article using chemical vapor deposition. The composite substrate includes a composite substrate including a carbon matrix. The surface of the composite article includes one or more surface voids. The method further includes applying a metal slurry to the surface of the composite article following the deposition of the carbon layer and reacting a metal of the metal slurry with carbon of the carbon layer to form an antioxidant layer of a metal carbide on the composite article.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a first component comprising a carbon composite substrate. A high temperature coating is disposed on the surface of the carbon composite substrate. The high temperature coating includes a bond layer of a metal carbide on the surface of the substrate. The apparatus includes a second component, and braze material joining the surface of the first component to the second component. In some examples, a brake assembly may include a rotor having a surface configured to interface with another component of the brake assembly. The brake assembly includes an insert joined to the surface of the rotor without a mechanical fastener, and the insert defines a tough mechanical contact surface configured to protect the rotor.

Abstract: A method includes forming a crystallized metal carbide undercoat on a surface of a carbon-carbon composite substrate. The method further includes forming an overcoat on a surface of the undercoat. The overcoat includes a plurality of crystallized ultra-high melting point overcoat layers. Each overcoat layer is sequentially formed by applying a mixture to a surface of an underlying layer and heating the mixture. The mixture includes a plurality of ultra-high melting point refractory ceramic particles and a pre-ceramic polymer. The mixture is heated to a heat treatment temperature to pyrolyze the pre-ceramic polymer and form the overcoat layer in an inert atmosphere or under vacuum. As a result, the overcoat layer includes a crystallized ultra-high melting point polymer-derived ceramic matrix that includes the plurality of ultra-high melting point refractory ceramic particles.

The components may include a substrate and a thermal barrier coating (TBC) having at least a first layer secured to a surface of the substrate. The first layer is formed of a ceramic material with a first microstructure that includes a plurality of interconnected unit cells having struts that have a relative density of greater than 98 percent and a closed cell porosity of 10 percent or greater. The TBC is secured to the substrate subsequent to formation of the TBC.

Abstract: An article including carbon-carbon composite substrate may be treated with an antioxidant coating prior to use in an oxidizing environment. The antioxidant coating may be configured to reduce oxidation at an external surface of the C—C composition and reduce ingress of oxidants into pores or other open passages defined by the C—C composite substrate to avoid internal oxidation. An example article includes a C—C composite substrate, a bond coat, and an antioxidant coating. The C—C composite substrate defines a friction surface and a non-friction surface. The bond coat is disposed on the non-friction surface. The antioxidant coating may be disposed on at least a portion of the bond coat. The antioxidant coating may include ytterbium disilicate and a sintering aid.

A first portion of the coating system closest to the surface of the substrate has a composition comprising at least 95 wt. % of a rare earth disilicate, a second portion of the coating system furthest from the surface of the substrate has a composition comprising at least 50 wt. % of a rare earth monosilicate, and a third portion between the first portion and the second portion has a composition comprising both the rare earth disilicate and the rare earth monosilicate.
