    Abstract: A fuel cell stack includes a fuel cell including a bipolar plate sheet. The bipolar plate sheet includes an outer sheet edge having a first longitudinal edge and a first transverse edge, a first surface, and a first load-bearing extension arranged on the first longitudinal edge or the first transverse edge. The first load-bearing extension is configured to engage with an alignment bar or a support bar of a fuel cell stack assembling apparatus within which the fuel cell stack is compressed for assembly such that, during compression of the fuel cell stack, the first load-bearing extension engages the alignment bar or the support bar so as to transfer force loads from the alignment bar or the support bar away from the first outer sheet edge and toward a central area of the first bipolar plate sheet.

    Abstract: An electrochemical cell stack assembly is disclosed comprising a member made of an elastic and electrically conductive material placed between a bus bar and a starter plate. The elastic, electrically conducting member covers at least a peripheral region along a perimeter of a recess housing the bus bar to distribute compression forces over an interface area between the bus bar and an insulator end plate, thereby reducing shear stresses in the starter plate when the stack is compressed. An elastic pad also may be arranged in the recess and between the insulator end plate and the bus bar.

    Abstract: Some embodiments of the present invention provide a balance-of-plant system and apparatus suited for regulating the operation of an electrolyzer cell stack. Specifically, in some embodiments, a balance-of-plant system and apparatus is operable to regulate the respective pressures of at least two reaction products relative to one another. Various examples are provided to demonstrate how the respective pressures of two reaction products can be regulated in relation to one another in a pressure following configuration, thereby regulating the pressure differential across an electrolyte layer according to aspects of different embodiments of the invention. Some of the examples provided also include design simplifications and alternatives that may reduce production costs of electrochemical cells configured according to aspects of different embodiments of the invention.
