Abstract:
A tape provides a supply of doubly adhesively faced pads for individual application to a receiving surface. The tape comprises a generally elongate flexible base layer of material having one side with a first release surface, and a plurality of pads of material carried on the first release surface of the base layer arranged in succession along the length of the base layer. Each of the pads has first and second tacky faces facing in opposite directions and has the first of its tacky faces releasably adhered to the first release surface of the base layer. The base layer of material has a second side facing oppositely to the first side and has a second release surface, so that the base layer may be rolled up to bring the second release surface thereof into engagement with the second tacky faces of the pads.
Abstract:
An apparatus for use in improving the accuracy of optical systems such as internal drum photoplotters includes a raster scanner responsive to control signals for advancing relative to a substrate an optical beam across a substrate surface in a first direction forming a scan line and for cooperatively advancing relative to the substrate the optical beam in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction. A signal generator provides a clock signal configured to control the advancement of the optical beam in a first direction. There is a memory for storing error signals indicative of deviations of the curved surface from a preferred value of curvature. The apparatus is characterized by a controller for generating control signals in dependence on the error signals such that the phase of the clock signal is adjusted, thereby removing the curvature error for a segment of the scan line.
Abstract:
In a plotter or other device for drawing inked lines on a receiving surface, an ink reservoir holding a large quantity of ink is provided to attain a long operational life for the associated pen. The reservoir includes a piston or other moveable working member to which air pressure is applied for pressurizing the ink, and the ink reservoir and associated pen are permanently connected with one another and with a few ancillary parts to provide a unit assembly readily connected to and disconnected from a pen head to permit quick exchange of units without danger of ink spillage. The ink reservoir is transparent or translucent to give the operator a visual indication of when the unit assembly is in need of replacement because of imminent ink exhaustion, and sensor may also be provided for automatically producing an electrical "out of ink" signal which appears upon the complete exhaustion of ink from the unit.
Abstract:
In a table for supporting sheet material, such as cloth, in a spread condition while it is cut by a cutter the main structural component of the table consists of a panel having an upwardly facing support surface and made up of upper and lower sheets bonded to a core including at least one duct for supplying air at vacuum pressure or positive pressure to openings spaced longitudinally of the panel to supply vacuum or positive air pressure to selected parts or all of a material support surface defined by a bristle bed supported by and located above the upwardly facing support surface of the panel. Valves carried by the panel open and close the openings in the duct to selectively control the portion of the work material support surface to which vacuum or positive air pressure is applied.
Abstract:
A vibration damper for a rotary stepping motor consists of an inertial mass connectible to the shaft of the motor through a viscous coupling comprising a standard rolling element bearing unit filled with a high viscosity material such as a silicone compound.
Abstract:
An apparatus for cutting sheet material as a cantilever vacuum table with a fluid permeable support surface upon which sheet material may be spread. A movable vacuum box supported below the surface of the table defines a vacuum chamber and is connected outboard of a free edge of the table to a carriage assembly which moves a blade in cutting relation to material spread on the table in response to signals received from a programmable controller. The vacuum box moves with the blade and relative to the table to apply vacuum to a limited area of the table immediately surrounding the cutting region of the blade.
Abstract:
An automatically controlled cutting machine for cutting sheet material employs a cutting wheel and a hard, smooth and continuous surface of ferromagnetic material on which the sheet material is spread for cutting. To prevent shifting during cutting, the material is releasably attached to the support surface by adhesives, freezing, electrostatics and other securing means. The cutting wheel is forced downwardly against the hard support surface by an electromagnet mounted on the cutting wheel support to insure severing of the sheet material.

To prevent shifting during cutting, the material is releasably attached to the support surface by adhesives, freezing, electrostatics and other securing means. The cutting wheel is forced downwardly against the hard support surface by a number of means to insure severing of the sheet material and may be ultrasonically vibrated to facilitate the severing process.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for cutting sheet material utilizes a closed loop automatically controlled cutting machine having a reciprocating cutting blade as the cutting tool. Sheet material to be cut is spread in multiple plies to form a layup, and the cutting blade and the material are then moved relative to one another in cutting engagement along predefined lines of cut. During cutting, a sensor detects a cutting parameter that is affected by the interaction of the cutting blade and sheet material, and signals provided by the sensor are fed back in the closed loop automatic control mechanism to adjust or initiate further steps in the cutting operation. Such adjustment or initiation alters the cutting machine operation for cutting conditions in real time in order to improve the overall performance of the machine.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for cutting pattern pieces from sheet material with an automatically controlled cutting machine utilizes special control techniques for guiding a reciprocating cutting blade accurately along a desired cutting path defined by the pattern piece peripheries. The cutting machine includes a control computer which also serves as a data processor for generating machine command signals and controlling cutting blade movements. The controller has memory units which contain standard cutting programs and optinal programs. From a program selector panel, the cutting machine operator can select optional programs which modify the standard programs in a manner most suitably adapted to cause the cutting blade to follow the cutting path in the sheet material more accurately. The optional programs vary the feed rate or stroking speed, introduce yaw signals to control blade orientation along the cutting path, or perform other control functions.
