An error-correction format for transmitting digital television signals comprises segments of data, which segments may for example represent 48 successive horizontal lines of a television field. The segment comprises, for example, data groups n to n+23 and a final group n+24 which forms a vertical parity check group. Each of the data groups n to n+23 comprises m blocks, and each block comprises a synchronization and address sub-block followed by s data sub-blocks, each data sub-block being followed by respective inner code protection bits for providing error protection for the immediately preceding data sub-block, and finally followed by a cyclic redundancy check code for providing error protection for the s data sub-blocks in the block. The vertical parity group n+24 is just the same in format as the other groups n to n+23, but each sub-block thereof is made up of vertical parity check words which form an outer error correcting code in place of data words.

A method of concealing errors in a digital television signal formed by a plurality of sample signals corresponding respectively to sample positions along a horizontal scan line of a television picture made up of a plurality of such lines, the method comprising, in respect of each sample signal which is in error, selecting from a plurality of algorithms a preferred algorithm for correcting the error sample signal, calculating a corrected value of the error sample signal using the preferred algorithm, and substituting the corrected sample signal for the error sample signal so as to conceal the error. The algorithms may be four in number and use sample values located along four different directions respectively, such as the horizontal, the vertical, and the two diagonal directions of the television raster, to predict the known sample values at sample positions adjacent to the position of the error sample signal, the algorithm giving the best result being selected.

The apparatus comprises: means for generating a code word for at least each non-zero value input sample such that the code words for samples with values in each group have a most significant bit of one type in the same position, which position is different for different groups, and the sequence of bits of lower order than said most significant bit is different in code words for samples with different values in the same group; a run-length counter for generating a run-length count dependent upon the number of samples in a run of zero value input samples terminated by a non-zero value sample; means for generating a position indicator indicating the position of said most significant bit of one type in the code word for the non-zero value sample terminating the run; and means for extracting the sequence of bits of lower order than said most significant bit in that code word.

In a video signal clamping circuit, a FIFO register stores a sequence of digital samples of an input video signal taken during a portion of a horizontal blanking interval of the signal during which the signal is at a black level. A black level error PROM generates a digital error signal representing any deviation between a digital sample from the FIFO register and a reference black level. An accumulator accumulates digital error signals supplied thereto by the PROM to produce an accumulated digital error signal which is converted to analog form by a digital-to-analog converter. A clock controls the supply of the stores samples in sequence from the FIFO register to the PROM such that the samples are supplied, during a line-active period that follows the horizontal blanking interval, at a clock frequency which is less than the sampling frequency. The analog error signal is combined with the input video signal in an operational amplifier to cause the black level of the input video signal to approach the reference black level.
