A duty cycle based AC power control method reduces objectionable voltage fluctuations at a frequency that causes "flicker" by shifting the frequency of actuations of controlled devices to frequencies significantly greater than and/or less than the flicker sensitive frequency. The frequency of actuations may be redistributed (1) by segmenting the devices to provide approximately equal power requirements per actuation, (2) by providing one-half cycle actuation pulses rather than one cycle actuation pulses, and/or (3) by spacing the actuations evenly over a given time period and forcing the aggregate demand to follow a slowly rising/falling envelope. The result is the minimization of power distribution at the flicker frequency.

In system and method for smooth line raster-scan display, a frame buffer containing a high resolution map of information of an image for display is read so as to furnish plural line stored information for each single line of the raster display. Display circuitry of the system receives the plural line stored information and varyingly weights same to furnish such single line Z-axis information (intensity control) for an X-Y display matrix, such as a CRT display terminal. Means are included in the system for display of the entire frame buffer content on a first fractional basis, e.g., a two thousand line resolution buffer to five hundred line raster. Selection circuitry of the system provides for reading out only a fraction of the frame buffer content, e.g., one-fourth or the five hundred lines thereof, on five hundred raster lines, thus providing true resolution zoom capability.

A high performance graphics display system for use as an engineering workstation includes a compact method of generating vectors and transmitting addresses for same from a picture processor to frame buffer control circuitry for writing or reading pixel values along the vector in the frame buffer. The system uses a multiplexed address/data bus. Off-screen memory in communication with the picture processor is used to store pixel data read along vectors in the frame buffer preceding writing a vector so that the original data can be restored when the written vector is moved or removed. Vectors are encoded by the picture processor as a first word containing the address of the beginning point of the vector and major axis and X and Y direction bits to indicate the vector's direction. A second word includes a minor axis bit, indicating whether the next pixel to be written or read is on or off the major axis, in the direction indicated for such axis in the first word. The first word also includes a hesitate bit indicating whether the first pixel of a vector is to be written or read. The system is configured in pipe stages with a FIFO at each stage controlled by a hold signal that is pipelined from downstream stages in a direction opposite the pipelined data flow.
