Abstract:
A frame assembly for a light shutter including a frame structure for enclosing an electro-optic shutter assembly, the frame structure having a front surface which can be positioned opposite a cover lens, and a switch for controlling an operation mode of the electro-optic shutter assembly, the switch being mounted on the front surface whereby pressure applied to the cover lens activates the switch. The frame assembly can be inserted and used in a welding helmet or other protective eyewear having a standard sized lens aperture.
Abstract:
A power supply circuit for a liquid crystal welding lens or shutter develops a relatively low voltage AC signal for driving or powering the liquid crystal shutter to the clear state and two relatively higher or larger magnitude AC electrical signals for initially driving the shutter to the dark state and then for maintaining the shutter in the dark state; a variable frequency circuit for varying the frequency of the driving signal to the shutter to minimize power usage in the dark state and to avoid flicker in the clear state; and power saving and battery level indicator features are included.
Abstract:
A multi-stage control for an auto-darkening lens includes a first detector to detect initiation of welding and a second detector to detect continuation of welding after welding has been initiated. The first detector has relatively low sensitivity and fast response time; and the second detector has relatively high sensitivity that can be altered as may be necessary, relatively slow response time to allow opportunity to determine whether welding is continuing as inputs indicative of welding, and adaptive filtering to filter ambient effects and the like from such inputs to avoid false detection of welding. A method of enhancing operation of an auto-darkening lens control that has a detector and associated circuitry to detect initiation of welding substantially independently of time based filtering and to maintain detecting of welding using time based discrimination, comprising coupling control signals and power to an auto-darkening lens via a substantially unimpeded path from a detector to the auto-darkening lens.
Abstract:
An indicator system and method for an auto-darkening lens or other device that is intended to be placed relatively close to the face of a wearer includes one or more indicators adjacent the lens and generally provides the indicators in the peripheral field of view of the wearer, allowing the indicators to be discerned without having to focus eye vision on them and while allowing the wearer to direct eye focus on a work piece or the like.
Abstract:
A head-mounted display or other optical device which provides at least a first image to at least one eye of a user can be adjusted for changing the alignment of an image path with respect to a user's eye position. An alignment beam generator is mounted so as to move with the image path device so a user can use characteristics of the alignment beam to achieve a desired alignment of the image path. Preferably, the alignment beam is configured, such as by making it substantially narrow-beam, linear and/or non-dispersive, such that beam is substantially invisible to the user until it is within a preferred alignment range, so as to provide a binary or visible/invisible, indicator of alignment.
Abstract:
A welding helmet and lens therefor includes a shield and a lens including a two identical optical components, each including a polarizer, a further polarizer (analyzer) optically between said optical components and effectively shared as an output device from one optical component and an input device for the other optical component, the transmissive axes of respective polarizers of said optical components being operatively oriented relative to one another to improve extinction of light incident on said lens at prescribed angles. The lens may be used in other optical systems. A method of making a light transmission controlling optical system employing two optical components control device, includes assembling a plurality of identical optical components, each having substantially identical alignment characteristics, positioning at least two of the optical components in optical series such that at least one optical component is facing in a direction opposite the facing direction of the other optical component, whereby the polar alignment of at least one part of both of said optical components is equi-angular and opposite sense relative to a reference direction.
Abstract:
A driving circuit for a liquid crystal shutter or for other devices that reduces the power drain on the portable power supply and has the characteristic of fast response time. Accurate voltage regulation also is provided by referencing an accurate reference voltage supplied by a diode.
Abstract:
Light transmission control device includes band pass filter for transmitting light of a wavelength or group of wavelengths and partially blocking transmission of light of a different wavelength or group of wavelengths, and variable optical filter for controllably transmitting light of a wavelength or group of wavelengths, the band pass filter and variable optical filter being cooperative to provide at least three light transmitting modes, including maximum transmission, minimum transmission, and a third mode less transmissive than the maximum, the device being operative to minimum transmissive mode upon being driven by a maximum energy input, the device also being operative to maximum transmissive mode upon being driven by a lesser energy input, and such third transmission mode occurring in response to no power or a failure of power or adequate power for energizing the device to the maximum or minimum transmissive mode.
Abstract:
A display system and method for improving legibility of images viewed on a passive display in a bright environment, including apparatus and method for increasing or maintaining the range of grey levels for the image as viewed on the display and decreasing the number of grey levels used in that range.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for preparing an image signal includes combining with a video signal having a number of objects of interest metadata identifying the objects as Area of Interest (AOI). Exemplary objects includes an object in a group of objects, such as a horse in a horse race, a sports object, such as a hockey puck, and so on. The object may be an objectionable, such as a representation of violence, sex or vulgar language. A user may provide an input to select an object of interest to alter the prominence of the selected object. A display system responsive to the image signal for showing images having AOI with altered prominence based on user input. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing logic code for carrying out the foregoing.
