摘要: Generally speaking, systems, methods and media for managing shared inventory in a virtual universe are disclosed. Embodiments of the method may include receiving notification of a user session being established between a user and a virtual universe simulator. The method may also include accessing a list of shared inventory items for the user where the list of shared inventory items includes one or more shared inventory items each having an inventory source associated with it. Embodiments may also include retrieving at least one shared inventory item from its associated inventory source and passing the retrieved shared inventory item to the virtual universe simulator. Further embodiments may include retrieving an updated listing for the shared inventory items from their associated inventory sources and passing the updated shared inventory item list to the virtual universe simulator. Further embodiments may include passing metadata for shared inventory items to the virtual universe simulator.

摘要: Systems and methods for allowing an administrator or program to select a region or set of avatars in a virtual universe grid for splitting into another, separate and distinct virtual universe grid. If a region is selected, all of the avatars and virtual universe resources associated with the region are locked, their data is retrieved, and another separate virtual universe grid is commanded to create and insert the avatars and resources in it. If avatars are selected, all of the resources, scripts, histories, and information regarding the selected avatars are retrieved, and the avatars are locked in the source universe. Then, another, separate virtual universe grid is commanded to create universe user identifiers for the avatars, and they are inserted into the separate VU grid. Cleanup includes deleting the region and/or avatars from the first (source) virtual universe grid.

摘要: An improved system, method, service method, and data structure that facilitates collaboration with, communication of, and access to information, particularly in an education environment is disclosed. The invention includes a database having one or more records. Each record defines a logical connection between one or more querents and one or more respondents. Each logical connection has a strength value indicating the value of the logical connection. Some embodiments of the invention include a selecting process that selects one or more of the respondents to respond to one or more queries from a querent. Alternative embodiments of the invention include processes that mine the database and/or provide services to users.

摘要: The present invention provides a computer implemented method for transferring an item from a source virtual universe to a target virtual universe. A target virtual universe host opens a session between a source virtual universe host and itself. Next, it determines that the source virtual universe host is authorized to transmit the item to the target virtual universe host. Next, it receives a command from a client computer to transfer the item from the source virtual universe host to the target virtual universe host. Next, it receives item data in the target virtual universe host.

摘要: An interface device for connecting to and retrieving data from a remote computer system, and method of compressing, decompressing and transferring data therefor. A user may set transfer constraints on the interface device. The interface device may be a web browser. The user selecting a web site requests data, normally image data from a remote computer system. The interface device includes a cache memory where generic objects may be stored. Each generic object corresponds to an original object in the requested data. Depending on the data transfer constraints, instead of retrieving the entire image, e.g., web page image, unaltered from the host system, a compact generic image is retrieved, initially, wherein generic objects are substituted for each corresponding original object. A pseudo-image is displayed, with the generic objects substituted for corresponding original objects. Subsequently received original objects may be substituted for generic objects as each original object is received.

摘要: The educational system recommends to users, a most efficient manner of accomplishing tasks achievable by computing devices. The system detects command sequences executed by users during an interaction with computing devices distributed over a network in an attempt to achieve a certain goal. The command sequences are segmented, each segment is labeled with a goal identifying purpose mark, a cost of each segment is computed. The detected command sequences are then compared with the command sequences detected previously and the descriptions of the more efficient command sequences are provided to the users utilizing the less effective approaches. The detected command sequence is stored in place of less efficient of the command sequences and where no prior command sequences has been previously stored.

摘要: Disclosed is a system for displaying and accessing information on files, such as HTML web pages, downloaded from a server over a network, such as the Internet. A monitor linked to a computer displays a graphical user interface, such as web browser. The computer is linked to the network. The graphical user interface is used to download a plurality of files from the server over the network. The files downloaded from the server are stored in a cache associated with the computer. At least one graphical representation of a file stored in the cache is displayed in a display region of the graphical user interface. An input means may be used to select a file by selecting with the input means one of the displayed graphical representations of the files. The input means is further used to cause the display of data stored in the selected file in the display region of the graphical user interface.

摘要: Using a graphical user interface (GUI), users manipulate, organize, classify, and/or arrange web-page icons by having the icons be consolidated in schedule-control icons (SCI) containing regions. Regions may be on icons, windows, or other graphical objects. For example, when an icon representing a web page is dragged close to a region on an SCI, the subscription update schedule for that web page is changed. The schedule value depends upon to which region on the SCI an icon is dragged.

摘要: This invention permits users to conveniently examine functions, applications, data, and other parameters for different periods of time. A region of the graphical user interface is provided to which other icons may be dragged so that the function represented by the dragged icon returns to a prior state or is extrapolated to a future state. By storing the previous m versions of a file, application, database, etc., where m is user selectable, the user can review prior versions of that file, application, or database without explicitly having to track those versions. The graphical nature of the present invention provides a significantly more intuitive way to manipulate the time.

摘要: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for performing computer system management on an activity basis. In one embodiment, computer-system-related items are associated with at least one activity to be performed using the computer system. Then, management procedures are established for the at least one activity. Next, when the computer system is used to perform the at least one activity, the computer-system-related items associated with the at least one activity are managed in accordance with the management procedures established for the at least one activity. In another embodiment, apparatus and methods monitor patterns of use of a computer system. Using information gathered during monitoring operations, activity models are formulated, and for each activity model a management plan is devised. After management plans have been devised for each activity model, the use of the computer system is monitored to identify actions being performed with the computer system. The identified actions are then compared with the activity models to determine which activity model best fits the identified actions. Management of computer-system-related items associated with the activity is then performed using the management plan associated with the activity model that best fits the actions being performed with the computer system.
