Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The system includes a primary heat transfer loop configured to be disposed at least partially outside of a building, and the primary heat transfer loop includes a heat exchanger, a compressor configured to compress a refrigerant, where the refrigerant is reactive, a condenser configured to receive and condense the refrigerant, and an expansion device configured to reduce a temperature of the refrigerant. The system further includes a secondary heat transfer loop configured to circulate a two-phase fluid at least partially inside the building, wherein the two-phase fluid is less reactive than the refrigerant. The secondary heat transfer loop includes the heat exchanger, where the heat exchanger is configured to transfer energy from the two-phase fluid circulating in the secondary heat transfer loop to the refrigerant, and an evaporator configured to evaporate the two-phase fluid by exchanging energy with an air supply stream flowing across the evaporator.

The fluid distribution system includes an actuator coupled to the distributor tube and configured to be actuated to adjust a geometry of the distributor tube. Additionally, the fluid distribution system includes a controller configured to instruct the actuator to adjust the geometry of the distributor tube based on an operating condition.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a cooling system includes an evaporator, which further includes an evaporator tube, a first mechanical wave emitter, and a control system communicatively coupled to the first mechanical wave emitter. The cooling system is configured to circulate refrigerant through the evaporator tube to facilitate heat exchange between the refrigerant and fluid surrounding the evaporator tube. The first mechanical wave emitter is configured to output first mechanical waves to the evaporator tube, and the control system is configured to instruct the first mechanical wave emitter to output the first mechanical waves to enhance nucleation of the refrigerant in the evaporator tube.

Abstract: A refrigerant leak management system of a HVAC unit includes a sensor configured to detect a refrigerant in an interior of an air handling enclosure. The refrigerant leak management system includes a plurality of airflow management assemblies configured to fluidly isolate the interior of the air handling enclosure in a closed configuration. The plurality of airflow management assemblies includes a return inlet assembly, a supply outlet assembly, and a purge exhaust outlet assembly. The refrigerant leak management system includes a controller configured to actuate the purge exhaust outlet assembly based on detection of the refrigerant by the sensor such that the purge exhaust outlet assembly transitions from a closed position of the purge exhaust outlet assembly to an open position of the purge exhaust outlet assembly that opens the interior of the air handling enclosure to an external environment.

Abstract: A combined suction header and accumulator for a refrigeration system is described that may protect a compressor from refrigerant liquid entering the compressor while reducing superheat used to evaporate the refrigerant. The combined suction header and accumulator unit for a refrigeration system includes a suction header coupled to an exit side of an evaporator. The suction header includes a main body and receives a flow of refrigerant from the evaporator. The flow of refrigerant includes a liquid portion and a vapor portion. The combined suction header and accumulator unit includes a liquid accumulator disposed within the main body of the suction header. The liquid accumulator blocks the liquid portion of the flow of refrigerant from exiting the main body.
